Add UB to the list of schools where certain students place no value on the principle of free speech.

MUSLIMS CAN BE MUSLIM, BUT CATHOLICS AREN’T SUPPOSED TO BE CATHOLIC:

Students cry because Catholic chaplain opposes pride flag, follows ‘theological beliefs.’

University of Portland students “passed around” tissues during a recent open meeting with Dan Parrish, a professor and Catholic priest, because of his statements on human sexuality and against the rainbow pride flag.

Parrish is a pastoral resident, meaning he lives in a residence hall. He reportedly had shared messages on social media and in email that upset students. He is also the men’s basketball team chaplain.

Bill C-11, the Online Streaming Act — the successor to the scrapped Bill C-10 that drew much scorn last spring — once again proposes placing YouTube (and other platforms like it) under the authority of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), which will have the power to force YouTube to categorize and distribute its content the way Canadian television and radio stations already must.

In practice, this means dictating “the proportion of time that shall be devoted to the broadcasting of Canadian programs,” as well as “prescribing what constitutes a Canadian program.” This could conceivably obligate YouTube to bury foreign videos whenever a Canadian uses its search engine, as well as force Canadian creators to fill out some sort of checklist when they upload a video in order to affirm it fulfills government-dictated criteria of Canadian-ness and is worthy of “discoverability” in the new search algorithm. It could even force Canadian users to automatically subscribe to channels the government thinks are worthy — à la Canadian cable providers’ current obligation to make Canadians subscribe to stations such as the CBC and the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network regardless if they want to or not. Clause 10.1(k) of the proposed legislation awards the CRTC ominous, open-ended power to decree regulations “respecting such other matters as it deems necessary for the furtherance of its objects.”

As I think back to my college days and all the room mates I had.  I don't even know what their political persuasions were.  We were too busy chasing girls, drinking beer, smoking weed, playing music, studying etc to be concerned about that political stuff.

A HUGE WIN FOR FREE SPEECH

This is seismic: a panel of the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals has upheld Texas’s new law banning viewpoint discrimination by the major social media platforms. The case is NetChoice v. Paxton, and the opinion is by Judge Andrew Oldham. Oldham is a brilliant guy with a gilt-edged pedigree.

The Texas law is similar to the one I drafted for the Minnesota legislature (which has not yet been enacted), in that it is couched as a ban on viewpoint discrimination. It is different in that it explicitly labels the major platforms as common carriers, and it also does not provide for statutory damages.

The Court’s majority opinion is long, detailed, and to my mind persuasive. At times, it is almost mocking in its characterizations of the Platforms’ (as those parties are collectively referred to) legal positions.

Federal Court rules Big Tech has no 'freewheeling First Amendment right to censor'

by Brianna Herlihy

A federal appeals court upheld a Texas law on Friday that seeks to curb censorship by social media platforms. The ruling, a major victory for Republicans who charge companies like Twitter and Facebook are limiting free speech, is a step in a major legal battle that could end up at the Supreme Court.

THE DEMOCRATS’ GOAL IS TO CRIMINALIZE POLITICAL OPPOSITION:

Senator Durbin makes some anti democracy claims at times. I will never get over a United States Senator (him) telling a US citizen (Kavanaugh) that if you didn't do anything wrong you should not fear an investigation.  And if you don't want an investigation, it means you did something so we should investigate.  I wonder in which semester at Georgetown Law School he leaned that?
