B-Man Posted June 27, 2020 Posted June 27, 2020 "It is not safe to speak, but it is even less safe not to speak. … You'll just be a miserable worm at the end of about 20 years of that." "No self respect, no power, no ability to voice your opinions, nothing left but resentment, because everyone's against you, because of course you've never stood up for yourself.… Don't be thinking you're alone. It's just that people … are afraid to talk or they don't know what to say.… The enemy is a cloud. They're a cloud of gnats. They're only courageous in groups. They're only courageous in mobs. If you stand your ground and don't apologize and articulate things properly, they'll disperse around you like they're not even there. So most of it's illusion." B-Man Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 FINALLY: Feds warn UCLA about disciplining professor who read N-word from MLK letter. The US Department of Education has warned UCLA it could face fines if it disciplines a political science professor who read the N-word from Martin Luther King Jr.’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail.” Lecturer W. Ajax Peris, an Air Force veteran, has been under investigation since early this month. UCLA Political Science Chair Michael Chwe and two others in his department had blasted Peris in an email, agreeing with students’ complaints that he didn’t “pause and reassess [his] teaching pedagogy” after objections to the N-word. An apology from Peris did little to assuage students and faculty. According to Fox News, Chwe and company alleged Peris’s act of contrition “escalated the situation rather than engaging in […] thoughtful and open discourse.” The DOE informed UCLA that Peris has been “improperly and abusively targeted.” Universities need adult supervision these days, and while I’d rather that not be the case, the DoE and DOJ need to provide some.
B-Man Posted June 29, 2020 Posted June 29, 2020 STEPHEN KRUISER: Kimmel, Cancel Culture, and the Future of Comedy. I first began doing stand-up comedy in the early 1980’s at the beginning of the comedy boom in America. It was a real no-holds-barred affair and — not gonna lie — it was glorious. Comics had creative freedom that almost seemed like our birthright. When I first began going on the road professionally a few years later it was still like that. Little did we know at the time that a generation of humorless scolds was being spawned right under our noses. Previously: Comedians Dump Campus Gigs: When Did Colleges Lose Their Sense of Humor?
B-Man Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 FACULTY — AND ESPECIALLY ADMINISTRATORS — TEND TO ENCOURAGE THE EXACT OPPOSITE: Colleges must teach ‘constructive dialogue’ or students will keep getting more intolerant, UNC researchers say. Most conservative and liberal students at the University of North Carolina want to socially engage with each other, enjoy having classes with the other, and agree that the university is better with their differently minded peers on campus. Then what’s the problem? Faculty and administrators aren’t teaching them how to engage with each other outside the classroom – a venue for structured debate that doesn’t mirror their daily lives, a professor said in an online event. Americans used to know how to do this, before some people thought it was better that they didn’t. Academic department calls on Penn State to require ‘structural racism’ courses. THEY DIDN’T START THE FIRE — WELL, EXCEPT THAT, YOU KNOW, THEY DID: Bashing Administrators While The University Burns. Reduce their numbers to 2000 levels and we’ll talk. It’s not like universities were understaffed then.
B-Man Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 CHANGE: Momentum Building in States to Require Campus ‘Intellectual Diversity.’ One of the arguments for affirmative action is that taxpayers can’t be expected to support schools that look radically different from their states’ population. Apply this to politics and an awful lot of campuses fail. CHARLES LIPSON: Three Ideas to End the Rot on College Campuses. “It’s not just that a careless word can cost your job, it’s that people tremble in fear that they might say the wrong word.” Very Sovietesque. More: What’s wrong with this rigid groupthink? First, it takes real problems, such as police misconduct or Confederate statues, and inflates them for political purposes. It vastly exaggerates their extent and gravity, mistakenly generalizes them (Ulysses Grant is not Stonewall Jackson), ignores significant progress in correcting old errors, calls any disagreement “racist,” and relies on intimidation and sometimes violence, not democratic procedures, to get their way. The loudest voices say America and its history are fundamentally evil, that its institutions need to be smashed so they can be reestablished on “socially just” foundations. The mob and their fellow travelers will determine what is just. Who gives them that right? This arrogation of power and attack on public order will not end well. The second problem is that America’s major institutions have been overwhelmed by these demands and have bowed down to them. Public trust has eroded in all America’s major institutions since the late 1960s. We now see the supine results. Instead of standing up to this swelling irrationalism and intimidation, they have appeased it—and sometimes embraced it. Predictably, appeasement has only fueled more extreme demands. The rot began in America’s universities before spreading to mass media, cultural magazines, philanthropies, museums, and corporations. More and more parents are concerned that it now suffuses K-12 education. They don’t want a Pollyanna history, but neither do they want their children indoctrinated with a grim, doctrinaire view that America is an evil nation, incapable of reforming its own defects. Universities have led this parade of self-flagellation. One reason is that so many administrators and professors agree with the mob demands. Read the whole thing. .
B-Man Posted June 30, 2020 Posted June 30, 2020 Orwellian Phrase of the Day. My nomination for the most Orwellian phrase of the moment is, “We need to have a conversation about X [race, class, gender, policing, inequality—fill in the blank].” What “we need a conversation” means in practice is, “You shut up and agree with the left.” It seems the (checks notes) Harvard Business Review agrees, in an article titled, “Academia Isn’t a Safe Haven for Conversations About Race and Racism.” The interesting thing about this article is that it is written by two “progressives” entirely in sympathy with the leftist view of racial matters, but amusingly they note that there aren’t serious conversations about race because white progressive shut down minority voices. That’s not quite how they put it, but it is easy to read between the lines here: Our research, personal stories, and the experiences of many others don’t offer much cause for optimism. Why? When people of color give voice to the discrimination they experience, they are often silenced by their white colleagues, many of whom purport to be liberal progressives. And although there is a perception that academia is a safe haven for these kinds of honest conversations, it is often the opposite. Until this changes in education and beyond, it’s our view that we will be unable to reach racial equity in white institutional spaces. [Emphasis added.]

B-Man Posted July 3, 2020 Posted July 3, 2020 Never Give an Inch By Deanna Chadwell The lawless events of the last few weeks (months, counting the overreach of many state governments in the COVID panic) have left me acutely aware of my own human desire for order, and I have to take a deep breath whenever I find myself wishing Trump would just whip out the military and put a stop to it all. But that’s what the desperate Democrats want -- the Rules for Radicals vindication -- create so much chaos that the masses beg for someone to take control. But we can’t let that happen. So I would like to suggest a new motto for conservatives and libertarians alike. It comes from Ken Kesey’s novel, Sometimes a Great Notion -- “Never give a goddamn inch. We don’t have any inches left. We can’t compromise or concede anything. They’re destroying our history, our economy, our connections with God. They want to tear apart our families and they’ve already made mockeries of our schools. This last spate of riots has to be the end. We can tolerate this Mad Hatter’s tea party no longer. “Black Lives Matter?” Whoever said they didn’t? What does that even mean? Two hundred years ago when most American blacks were slaves -- even then -- black lives mattered -- they were money. There’s nothing even remotely rational in that slogan. What would they have chanted had Floyd been white? It looked to me like a terrible miscarriage of justice no matter what the color of his skin, so had he been, say, Jewish, would the rioters have been stealing TVs and torching cop cars? Would they have been chanting, “Jewish Lives Matter?” So what does it mean? Not much. We abort black babies more often than babies of any other race, but those lives evidently don’t “matter.” The cruelty of the abortion procedures evidently isn’t an issue to these miscreants. The black cops on the street are treated with even worse disrespect than the white cops, so it’s not their lives that matter. Republicans, ever since there were Republicans, have done everything we could to make black lives not only matter, but make them better, so what are these folks (a large percentage who are white) fussing about? And, since we all agree that black lives matter -- as do all other lives -- then what’s the point? There isn’t one. Blacks in this country are doing well -- under this president, financially better than they ever have. We’d all like to see black families put back together, but that’s not anything a riot will fix. We’d like to see school choice so that black children have a better shot at an education, but the left is adamantly against that. So, what? It’s never been clearer that this has been fit-throwing for fit-throwing’s sake -- and for the sake of stealing the coming election. Which leads me to conclude that the wrong side knows that it’s losing. The left will try to cheat its way to the White House, but all they have to offer is a hollow shell of a man who never amounted to much in the first place. So, they will have to continue throwing fits, throwing up a smoke screen so no one notices that they have no candidate. This will be a long hot summer, a marathon of ugliness and lying and danger. And we have to be up for it. MORE at the link: https://www.americanthinker.com/articles/2020/07/never_give_an_inch_.html 1
