Should have been talk about how Polian didn't finish the roster.......which was both physically and psychologically required once the SB came around.

The defense got punched in the mouth in SBXXV and clearly were anticipating trying to survive the onslaught of even bigger 330 pound OL in each subsequent SB.

They really needed a nose tackle in the worst way and Polian couldn't get it done.

Pre-free agency there was a feeling that the Bills were going to have a good 5-8 year run at SB's with these players........there was talk of a window of opportunity with each subsequent loss.......but their stars were pretty young....veteran teams were often successful in the NFL.......and the roster was absolutely loaded with depth so there was a feeling that maybe this could be a Niners like situation that could win for a long time if they didn't mess it up.

I think this prevented them from making the kind of bold finishing move that Dallas made in getting Charles Haley.

That was what the Bills needed during the SB run........and after the Leonard Smith acquisition Polian never seemed willing to swing a deal for a star player again to get those SB teams over the hump.

That hurt a lot because teams like Washington/Dallas/SF had rosters that were heavily fortified by players like that.

They should've kept Smerlas for another year, instead of going with "Jeff Wrong".

He was actually on the Niners that year if you recall so his team almost faced the Bills in SBXXV.

Not certain he could have helped at that point in his career but it's possible he could have.

In any event they needed a real nose tackle. By the time Butler wised up and got Ted Washington the window was closing offensively.

Polian deserves as much credit for the losses and the wins, IMO.

He came off very faultless in that documentary and it's not the truth.

He resented the media telling him he needed a real NT, or a real FS and.....even a real kicker.

I don't blame Norwood for missing a kick that was out of his range........but Polian should have cut him after that season.

The storyline that Norwood was a hero for kicking a short field goal that ended up being the difference in the Denver championship game was totally disingenuous as well.

If he had missed that kick after struggling that season Polian really would have heard about it.

Norwood was frickin' shot at that point.

If you didn't know better, you'd have thought that kick was a last second field goal, or at least the go ahead score at the time.

I thought they could have brought in some players who'd been on winning super bowl teams, as a way to offset the stigma. But the bills either didn't recognize the need or decided to stay insular in their approach.

I thought just that.

This kind of stuff is why I don't really believe documentaries to be more than entertainment anymore. Too many liberties taken to build drama.

And that era was full of things like that.

There were mercenaries jumping sides all over the NFC........and making a difference.

Polian is a stubborn, stubborn guy.

What he did in Indy was similar.......and that is why they won only one SB with the great Peyton Manning.

I think Polian always felt that if he stayed the course then sooner or later things would fall in place for the Bills to win some SB's.......like they eventually did when the Patriots fell ill and blew a big lead in Indy in the AFC Championship and the Colts got to feast on an inferior Rex Grossman lead Bears team to win their SB.

But for the Bills that opportunity was SBXXV.

After that, they got healthy, elite teams in their SB matchups and needed re-inforcements, even if only to clear their mental hurdles.
