FireChan Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Adam Schefter @AdamSchefter 39s40 seconds ago MAJOR changes in Detroit: Lions have fired GM Martin Mayhew and president Tom Lewand, league sources told ESPN.
GunnerBill Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 I expected a drop off this year in Detroit but it has been dramatic. Caldwell is done at the end of the year one would assume and that is probably it for him as a HC.
26CornerBlitz Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 @RapSheet #Lions source on the firings today: “Total wipeout.” Apparently, bosses are going through the building deciding who stays and goes.
26CornerBlitz Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Martha Ford went rogue? Did she run over anyone in a Model T?
The Frankish Reich Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 (edited) Bills front office, take notice. This is what happens when your franchise's window of opportunity closes without your team winning anything notable. Bills 2014-15 = Lions 2013-14. EDIT: ok, maybe that was too bleak. The optimistic way of looking at it is that we're the Lions in 2010-11, with 3-year run of spotty success ahead of us until age and contract issues catch up with us ... I fear it's true though.
Nihilarian Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 I think Caldwell's done in Detroit after this year, if not before the season ends. I thought Mayhew did a decent job building that team, and not so much in keeping those D line players.

I thought Mayhew did a decent job building that team, and not so much in keeping those D line players. Decent. Their past several drafts have been so-so outside of their first picks. Was really surprised they let Fairley go along with Suh too. He did a good job of turning around a disaster, but they still haven't found any consistency.
Kelly the Dog Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 From Gil Brandt... @Gil_Brandt: Last coach to get another NFL HC job after leaving #Lions was Buddy Parker in 1957. 16 coaches have come, gone since then w/out resurfacing Maybe Schwartz will but not a given.
TheFunPolice Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 (edited) Schwartz is a good DC and not a good HC I know these guys have egos but what's wrong with being a celebrated DC/OC on a winning team, making money, and staying in one spot piling up wins, division titles, and SB rings? YoloinOhio Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Schwartz is a good DC and not a good HCi don't see him getting another HC job either, but supply and demand ...
TheFunPolice Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 There will always be the new up and comer types, a college coach or two, and Whisenhunt.
Nanker Posted November 5, 2015 Posted November 5, 2015 Sweet BeJeepus when did this happen? FWIW I did search on "Detroit" and "Mayhew" and came up with stroons. Mayhew got a lot of press about being a good GM. He did land several good players in Round 1, later rounds... not so much. Then again, he didn't re-sign his core Defensive Line players either. He's the guy that gave Kelly a mild concussion in SB XXVI. Sorta payback for The Bills having cut him during TC. IIRC he made it to the final cut though.
GunnerBill Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 Schwartz is a good DC and not a good HC I know these guys have egos but what's wrong with being a celebrated DC/OC on a winning team, making money, and staying in one spot piling up wins, division titles, and SB rings? I think his best chance was by staying here and having 2 or 3 seasons with dominating defense - that would have put him back in the frame. He didn't get any interviews for HC gigs anywhere other than Buffalo last year but there isn't a lot of obvious former HCs who are out of work this time around so he might et interviews. I definitely think he WILL be in the frame Tennessee - a bit like Kubiak with Denver last year there are a lot of people inside the Titans organisation who know him and have great respect for him. Ad for him "not being a good HC" that is trotted out a lot. His first 3 years in Detroit were pretty good. Remember he took over an 0-16 football team and steadily improved them each year until they were a 10-6 play-off team. The two years after that it went wrong and he seemed to spiral a bit out of control but that ability to instil a winning attitude in a place that had stunk for a long time should not be under estimated.
Sisyphean Bills Posted November 6, 2015 Posted November 6, 2015 The press conference is on nfl.com for those interested. It is quite a departure from their standard operating procedure. Mayhew was one of those in-house moves that came after the Millen and Marinelli spectacular flame-out. I remember several NFL types really scratching their heads as to his hiring, since the 0-fer season was about as loud and clear a message as one could possibly entertain that some objectivity and perspective on how the show was being managed were sorely needed. That 0-fer team wasn't just unlucky; it was a world-class dumpster fire. Some of the plays I recall seeing almost looks like a Hollywood movie, some slapstick comedy gone awry. Defenders literally running away from the ball-carrier, etc. Lake Erie does seem to be the bottom of the NFL landscape...
