By definition they are a sandwich but I still don't consider it one. A sandwich is by definition: an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.

Especially if you put chili, sauerkraut, pickles, onions, on a hot dog, it's technically a sandwich.

I say yes. Meat and assorted toppings between bread. If a sub is a sandwich then a hot dog is a sandwich.

You have a point considering that a "sub" has a number of fillings (like meat or whatever you may choose) loaded in a piece of bread that has been barely "sliced in two" therefor a hot dog is pretty much the same.

Alton Brown says so, and I trust his opinion on the matter:

He has to be referring to soft tacos. He has to.

On the other hand, I usually put jelly on an Egg'a Muffin. No PB though.
