Nanker
A real hot dog is prepared and presented on a proper hot dog bun. The bun is sliced on its side and therefore must be rotated 90º on its longitudinal axis in order to be eaten. Therefore, a hot dog on a proper hot dog bun is NOT a sandwich, as any other sandwich would drop crap in yer lap if it were rotated 90º in order to be eaten. Somewhere some how some time ago, people in the North East of this country - generally referred to as New England - came up with a rank perversion of the rules, and decided without authorization from The League, its Commissioner, or any other source that they would put the slice along the TOP of the "bun". They stick lobster salad and fried clams and fried oysters in those things, and they always call them ROLLS. It's yet again another example of the culture of cheating in that area of the world has been marinating in for decades. Now one could argue that this style of hot dog could be called a sandwich - because it lacks the required 90º rotation of a true Hot Dog on a Proper Hot Dog Bun. But you would have to argue that with a bunch of rule-skirting, dope-smoking, poaching homesteaders in New England, and they've already called it a "Roll". Exhibit A. A Proper Hot Dog BUN Exhibit B. A Hot Dog in a Proper Hot Dog Bun - in its 90º rotation - ready for consumption Exhibit C. An example of the New England style ROLL Exhibit D. A Hot Dog on a New England style ROLL Edited November 8, 2015 by Nanker
