It is a young soybean. I would assume it comes down to labeling regulations. Soy is a declarable allergen. Since the name of the product does not contain soy, and soy is not listed on the label, it is considered adulterated.

I'm making the same face as your avatar right now but I guess I get what you're saying. People don't know that edamame is a soy bean so it needs to be declared as containing soy...but I would hope that someone who is allergic to soy would know that.

And peanut butter carries a "contains peanuts" warning. And Pop Tarts have a "Caution: pastries may be hot when heated" warning.

 

You're assuming common sense has any relation to this.
