H2o Posted October 30, 2015 Share Posted October 30, 2015 Discipline and execution. Watching the Pats tonight on something just as simple as a single snap I realized this. Brady went through multiple hard counts trying to draw the defense on one play. I was waiting for someone to move and no one did. Everyone was on the same page. On defense everyone knows their assignment and plays their role. Pass rushers rush the passer, LB's attack their gaps or get to where they're supposed to be in coverage, the Secondary communicates well, and everyone knows their assignments. Rarely do you see a blown coverage or anyone out of place despite misdirections or play fakes. This made me think about the other teams who are upper echelon in this league. All have the same attributes, discipline and execution. A lot of it is coaching, but the players still have to execute. Say whatever you want, but we have as much if not more talent then most teams in this league, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Boatdrinks Posted October 30, 2015 Share Posted October 30, 2015 Yes, execution. If discipline = do YOUR job, then yes. Be in position, make the tackle, make the block, don't take pre-snap penalties. It's the little things. Coaching , less so. I see plays there to be made and guys just don't make them. Might be the QB, might be the LB, might be the DL. The Bills don't do the basics well enought to be good. Watch a good D and you will see how well they tackle . The first guy wraps up and the rest clean up. Bill Belichick doesn't tolerate players that make mistakes or that are late to practice. Fumblers get benched, as do players that drop a bunch of passes. Miss a team practice or meeting, and you lose your job, period! This head coach, and schemes have been the same for the past 15 years, and in that time its now easy to build continuity in every aspect. Wanna know why Brady is one of the least hit QB's in the league? Phil Simms said on the Inside the NFL show that in an interview with Belichick, Bill said that he has five guys on the roster that can play LT. Simms went on to elaborate that the Patriots want to make certain that Tom Brady is protected the best they can. So it doesn't matter what round a player is drafted in or how well he played in college as its what they do on the practice field in New England is what matters. Look at the Bengals this year against Buffalo they had only 3 penalties for 20 yards, and were very well disciplined. They also executed their game plan pretty flawlessly. But to me discipline, consistency and durability and all attributes of "talent". Jerry Hughes and Aaron Williams are not great talents because they lack discipline. Don't see anything good happening until the FO starts challenging the status quo. Schwartz tenure as HC was marred by undisciplined play and a team that underachieved for it's talent level. Ryan's teams overachieved at first , then things fell apart as the talent level dipped below average. What's the difference? All these Coaches in the NFL are eventually fired and recycled. I don't recall Belichick being available last offseason. The team had already gone the coordinator route and reached to the college ranks. Ryan was the highest profile hire the team has made since Chuck Knox. It was hardly a status quo move. Ryan will get 3 seasons barring a 2-14 disaster type year before that. In fact, in any given year some teams with "elite" or "franchise" quarterbacks don't even get into the playoffs. Some of the differences between the Bills and a playoff team include consistency, good coaching, good player selection, discipline, injuries, team leaders, and players that believe, If you find yourself playing for a legendary team with legendary coaches and legendary players, you tend to believe a little more and try a little harder. If Aaron Rodgers, Eli, Peyton, Brady throw you a pass, you don't get alligator arms. If James Harrison is on your team, you don't wiff on a tackle. If Belichick will sit you on the bench and cut you for stupid penalties or fumbling, you don't let those things happen. Success breeds success. 87168 Posted November 1, 2015 Share Posted November 1, 2015 (edited) you have a coach that has taken one the BEST defenses in the league, completely changed schemes, and the roles of his defensive players...and people blame the player(s) for not making plays? haha you play to your player's ability. you don't force VETERANS to change their style of play during the offseason and expect to be competitive. this only points to ONE individual, and that's Rex. the offense has it's problems, but lets be honest, they still manage to put point on the board (sans NYG game), even with EJ at QB. the culprit here, is Rex. so to answer your question, a compitent and intelligent coach is what were are lacking. the talent was here last season and even more so this season. Somewhere out there is video of Bill Belichick and Wes Welker on the sidelines during a pre - season game' Welker was injured. Edelman was starting and playing very well Belichick asked Welker if he ever heard of Wally Pipp, the Yankee first baseman replaced by Lou Gehrig. Welker kind of acted like it was no big deal - short story Welker gone shortly thereafter and Edelman is now the guy. Good teams dont beat themselves. They dont give the other team 90 yards a game in penalties. They don't take stupid penalties like taunting. Think about the stupid crap Stevie would do, the consistent penalties Hughes seems to get every game. Good teams have situational awareness, Good Qbs know when to throw it away and fight another down, dont take sacks that take you out of FG range. Bad QBs force balls they shouldnt, take stupid sacks. They dont run 5 yard routes when its 3rd and 7. Ever watch Edelman and think he's gonna get drilled but he knows when to get down. First down the drive continues. Robert Woods a few weeks ago and Shady last week, probably trying too hard, fighting for a yard or 2 we dont need and boom...fumble. The Leodis play years back against NE on MN, the fumble on the KO. I remember thinking before the kickoff, just dont let them stand you up and strip the ball. What happens....stood up and ball stripped. Its probably why almost every Bills fan is never really comfortable with a lead. We think how can we screw this up like the Dallas heartbreaking loss years ago. Good teams play smart, bad teams do stupid crap. Good teams find a way to win, bad teams find a way to lose.
