Mark Vader Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 This is an odd thought, but I hope they wouldn't change the Chargers uniforms. I doubt they would, but I saw the Packers throw back unis last week and it made me want to change the channel. Did they EVER really have such bad uniforms? You do realize that the Packers wore those uniforms about 60 years ago, right? They hadn't invented NFL marketing yet.
Augie Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 The stadium is terrible, prices are terrible, and frankly there's better things to do. Even though it'd suck if they moved, any die hard Bolts fan will have no problem driving 2-3 hours to the game in LA. That, and it seems like most cities that lose a team cough up for a new stadium and...... POOOF, magically a new team appears!

Augie Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 You do realize that the Packers wore those uniforms about 60 years ago, right? They hadn't invented NFL marketing yet. I did NOT realize that. The NFL didn't need a corporate marketing division, just one person with a little common sense would have sufficed. (I half kid, because fashions change, but it's hard to believe that was ever good.)

(I half kid, because fashions change, but it's hard to believe that was ever good.) Football uniforms were just that, uniforms. No one thought they needed to be stylish. Remember the Steelers throwbacks? Yikes. Then again, there was some hideous stuff in the 70's. Remember the World Football League?

Dorkington Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 That, and it seems like most cities that lose a team cough up for a new stadium and...... POOOF, magically a new team appears! Yeah, afaik, San Diego doesn't want to, because it's BS (and it is BS, the NFL and teams have more than enough money to build the damned stadiums themselves, and San Diego doesn't need the stadium for tourism reasons). Isn't that what everyone said about Bills fans if the Bills were to move to Toronto? Yup. I'm not saying it doesn't suck. But driving a couple hours between San Diego and LA is a relative breeze all year around compared to trying to get to and from Canada, in my experiences.
truth on hold Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Why don't they split games between SD and LA? When the market's are to close together like that, merge them
chaccof Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Recall who stole the Buffalo Braves. Still stinks. By the way, why is the NFL so against expanding? The NFL's official position has been as follows: We want to return to the Los Angeles market. We want to have a team in London some day. We want our teams to stay in their existing markets. We do not want to expand. Can't do all four. Wonder which position is BS? Stole the Braves? Paul Snyder sold the team to that guy from Kentucky (name escapes me - wife was on CBS Football pregame for years) - he had no ties to Buffalo and if you're old enough to remember you'll remember that hardly anyone went to see the Braves play....
26CornerBlitz Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Why don't they split games between SD and LA? When the market's are to close together like that, merge them I can't see San Diego approving any measure or funding for a new venue for 4 or 5 home games per season including preseason. They have had a hard enough time getting a new stadium to keep the team exclusively in town.

26CornerBlitz Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Keep the one they have have. LA has the coliseum too Both terribly outdated venues for today's NFL. Not going to happen.
EasternOHBillsFan Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 As a Bills fan in San Diego, sports fans here are like Dolphins fans in Miami... a few passionate ones sprinkled around. I'm not sticking around this area despite the "beautiful weather" that is turning into Arizona real fast with all the outrageous drought conditions, $3.00/gal gas while everyone else enjoys under $2 a gallon, and other things. I would NOT recommend San Diego to anyone from the rest of the country... soon it's going to be REAL bad. Football is going to be a very minor concern!!!

EasternOHBillsFan Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 whats up with that drought thing anyway? sounds scary. is it really turning into a desert? The temperatures were record setting this summer... late October, over 100 degrees at my place. Last year, close to the same temperatures but it cooled down sooner. There is just not enough water to keep things green here... the grass is turning brown due to lack of water. I'm betting eventually it very well could.

What you also need to look at beside changes in clothing styles is change in available materials and costs associated to make them. Believe it or not those who design logos and uniforms do not get them for free off internet and are paid very well (some say too well with some of the results) and they use higher cost materials in uniforms. The NFL could afford custom jerseys for each player if they wanted to not have them produced in same factory in China in which knockoffs are sold violating trademarks (except Washington which has lost its trademark). The NFL from 60 years ago had uniforms made in small factories using much different technologies and materials and paid quite a bit less and even with lower costs were significant costs to teams with teams making effort to recover uniforms of players cut and reuse them. Some of the teams which went bankrupt also still owed money to uniform makers but that was a bit earlier in history.

Augie Posted October 25, 2015 Posted October 25, 2015 Ironic that a top two (or 3/4) market that couldn't support a single team for years is now looking at a team from such a similar market (weather, other entertainment options, etc.). For years LA was always the threat hanging over every citie's head. Does that mean the environment for potential new stadiums has evolved? We have all the stadiums we can ask for? Even the Bills have a plan, I'm sure. The threat is no longer effective.

The threat is no longer effective.from what I understand, SDs issue isn't fan support or ticket sales, it is lack of corporations in SD to sell the suites in a new stadium and lack of public funding. Spanos won't privately fund. LA will easily sell the corporate suites and they don't even care about fan support. It's all about the first part to fund the stadium. The Cali residents would know more but I think it's the lack of corp HQ in SD, with it being a rather transient area with all the military.
