This is why the Pegulas went along:

The NFL is a complex web of relationships with long memories. Owners note which fraternity members support them and oppose them on personal initiatives and remember for future dealings.

In other words, it was a deposit in the karma bank. As one of the the league's newest owners, they weren't about start life being avatars of Ralph Wilson, who let's face it, probably wasn't the most popular owner by the end.

And if the folks deriding Kim & Terry for their decision think about it for more than a second, they made that vote to help solidify the Bills. How? By helping the NFL offset the loss of value having a franchise in Buffalo creates.

You know for a fact that if it were up to Jerry Jones and Bob Kraft the Bills would be in Toronto or London by now. The only saving grace about the Bills staying in Buffalo as far as they are concerned is the 50% jump in value all NFL franchises received when Terry Warbucks overpaid for the Bills by half a billion.

And ultimately, business won out over sentimentality. Unless anyone hasnt been paying attention, these NFL owners are ruthless and unflinching when it comes to chasing all possible revenue streams.

Whatever Kim & Terry think of franchises moving, their vote buys them some goodwill for Buffalo down the road, which by the way, Ralph had none of by the end.

This L.A. decision, perhaps more than any other in recent initiatives, hits home the point of football today: The business of the NFL is the NFL.

Good synopsis and analysis. The Old Guard is gone.

From Chicago? B-)

That's the weird thing about the Cardinals. They were the original vagabond franchise. Furthermore they were more Billsy than the Bills for decades of mediocrity. Arizona is the first place they were really supported.

Apologies to the "relocation is evil" crowd but the Rams belong in LA.

As others have noted, so glad to rest easy knowing the Bills aren't going to be a part of such discussions for at least the next couple of decades.

why do some folks insist on letting facts and reason get in the way of perfectly good conspiracy angles.......(sarcasm)

Because some people have a real problem with reality. They live in a fantasy land where football is all about tailgates and cheap tickets and thinking the NFL owes them something.

They also can't appreciate the good fortune they have while they moan about playoff droughts. Bills fans already won the Powerball.

I know Davis has expressed several times about the Raiders having no interest in moving to St. Louis, but in my mind that's the ideal solution. The Raiders brand is about as known as anything but the Cowboys and they have fans all over the country, the fans of St. Louis would be grateful for the move. Add in the Raiders - Chiefs rivalry would be turned up significantly if it's a Kansas City - St. Louis rivalry.

Embrace the stadium project, waive the relocation fee for them and give them a golden parachute to move there.

At least in St. Louis they would still somewhat fit in the AFC West.

Thanks. I love the fact that Ralph always voted against relocation, but he had absolutely nothing to lose. He was an original AFL owner who everyone knew to be a bit of a curmudgeon.

The Pegulas don't have that luxury. They are still incredibly new owners, and everything they do now will affect their relationship with the league for as long as they own the team. It's no different from any professional setting. The person who is in a job for decades gets cut a ton of slack for being a bit quirky and contrarian. If the new guy tries the same thing, it's a very different dynamic.

Hopefully they keep the name San Diego Chargers like the Niners did. I realize it's a bigger change in general, but I don't think LA Chargers sounds right at all.

You do know they were originally the LA Chargers, right? The name refers to Barron Hilton's new product for his hotels, the credit card.

On another note, does anybody know where Stan Kroenke went to college, what he studied, and what his GPA was?

Transylvania University. His major was how to drive a stake into the heart of your hometown, and his GPA was a cool 4.0.

It's amazing how many fans of football there are who seem to have no sense of AFL/NFL history.

Ralph, from the grave.

Pegula did not buy the Bills to make money. That's nonsense. He overpaid by $400m for no reason just to get it over with.

Of course he bought it to make money...because it is a guaranteed money maker. Why else would Kroenke be so hot to spend 2 billion to move his team to LA/Kroenke Stadium?

Pegula didn't commit an act of charity when buying the Bills. He voted yes on the move because he believes in his and his colleagues' right to run their businesses as they please---and he sees his share of a billion plus in relocation fees coming his way.

The bolded part is obviously false, as you figured out 2 sentences later. The NFL has never suffered for the valuation of the Bills, which has gone up annually before Pegula showed up.
