GunnerBill Posted October 19, 2015 Posted October 19, 2015 Through 6 games this Bills defense is only 17th best in the league in yards per game, 16th best in the league in points per game and 16th best in getting off the field on 3rd down. I am not worried about sack numbers or turnovers I am worried about those 3 numbers, because they are the key numbers for a modern NFL defense and they are below par for this set of players and this team. Worse than that yesterday Rex Ryan was not Rex Ryan. He has confused himself out of his style of defense. They were blitzing rarely and bringing next to no pressure (although there was still a few of the disguised blitz drop outs - which are my leas favourite calls). Go and compare it to the Indi game - THAT looked like a Rex Ryan defense. Every week since I think he has been guilty of overthinking himself and confusing himself. He has recognised that these players haven't yet completely understood his scheme so he is second guessing it. What we are running at the moment doesn't look like a Rex defense and isn't generating the numbers of a Rex Ryan defense. Something needs to change and it needs to change fast. Next week the defense should at least keep us competitive again because we are playing an offense that has had problems moving the ball... but we cannot go to the play-offs only shutting down Tennessee and Jacksonville. The fact is very simple.... the way this team is built middle of the pack on defense will not be good enough for the post-season. The D needs to get some stuff figured out and it needs to do it sharpish because this team is built on the premise of the D carrying the O... if it can't then 8-8 at the very, very best beckons. For the first time this season my belief that the drought will end is wavering. Things need fixing on the defensive side of the ball and it starts with Rex Ryan. Time to earn his corn.
Rob's House Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 I don't understand why we can't muster a pass rush. Mario always knocks down double digit sacks, Jerry Hughes has 20 in 2 years, Kyle Williams had 16 over the last 2 years, and Dareus averages over 7 per season over his first 4 years. Through 6 games they've combined for 5. I know it's not all about sacks, but at this rate they won't even combine for Mario's single season best. I don't know exactly what the problem is, but after massive success in two different systems I have to think the problem is in the coaching.
NOVABillsFan Posted October 20, 2015 Posted October 20, 2015 (edited) Karma says please stop bringing up playoffs this early in the season. To your post why the D sucks - The schedule thus far has the Bills facing teams with a combined 20 - 13 record. Two teams which are still undefeated. 3 of these teams had QB's throwing the ball in under 2 seconds. A pass rush can't get to a QB in that time. The backfield needs to cover players better off of the LOS. Edited October 20, 2015 by NOVABillsFan

After six weeks of the NFL regular season it should start to dawn on people that Rex Ryan is not a good NFL coach. 2. The Buffalo Bills QBs are below average. 3. 1 + 2 = 8-8.

Another way to look at it is that the teams they've faced would have a 17-16 record if the Bills had won those games.

I think it's still to early to give up on foot fetish boy but I can't for the life of me understand why they would try to reinvent the wheel with a defense already playing elite ball. It's classic over thinking. Guys like Mario Williams and Hughes are there to pin their ears back and get in the backfield and cause holy hell period.
