Fezmid Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 I thought they left because there was so much interest in high school and college hockey that there wasn't much left for NHL hockey. It is always interesting to search the internet for events which happened before the internet but I will see if I can find any attendance figures. 240815 http://groups-beta.google.com/group/rec.sp...b76762bad234a78 or better yet: http://tinyurl.com/5bkcd From what I've gathered reading several reports from the time, attendance was low because the team sucked (however low = 8000 and the stadium only held 14,000).. However, it sounds like the owners were doing a lot of it themselves by putting an inferior product on the ice and demanding a new stadium. Ask the Twins and Vikes -- Minnesotans do NOT support new stadiums; they expect the owners to fork over most of the money for the arenas (although a new stadium for the Gophers would probably go through because they're a college team). Fezmid Posted February 16, 2005 Posted February 16, 2005 With numbers like these the Sabres would have left although I did see a note that said they were hurt by having an WHA franchise in the city at the same time. Northstar Attendance by year 240821 What's wrong with the numbers their last two years? The Met only held 14,000.... '90-'91 was (from what I've read on USENET) when the owners were trying to force the city to build a new stadium and were putting a crappy product on the ice. After the '91 season, they were selling out with an average of nearly 14,000. CW

And I believe I read that comment I made about competition from high school and college hockey was written about the time they were trying to get a new franchise. I remember it because Pro hockey would seem like a no brainer in Minn. Although there were 10 years between them leaving and the new franchise coming. Alot can happen in 10 years.

Green was looking for citizens to foot the Bill where he should have but cried poor. Dallas gave him a lucrative option and he took it.....
