Bengals stalk Rex, history

Geoff Hobson - Bengals.com

While the 3-2 Bills try to scrape together a quorum from their injured list, the 5-0 Bengals look to adjourn for the bye week with a tie for their best start ever when they gather in the old meeting house Sunday (1 p.m.-Cincinnati’s Channel 12) in Western New York’s Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Bengals.com Media Roundtable has decided to avoid the trap of picking the trap game and opts for the empirical evidence that has emerged in the last month.

Buffalo News sports columnist Jerry Sullivan, whose wit and wisdom has blanketed the lakefront for a quarter of a century, doesn’t believe Bills head coach Rex Ryan’s defensive scheme has yet to take root and that the Bengals’ Andy Dalton becomes the latest quarterback to break up the Orchard Park bash.

John Kryk, The Toronto Sun NFL reporter whose fascinating book on football’s first hurry-up offense from more than 100 years ago is on the shelves (Stagg vs. Yost), doesn’t see the Bengals going a point-a-minute. But he does see more than enough to win a slugfest.

Coley Harvey, who covers the Bengals for ESPN.com, used to cover Florida State and has some insight on former Seminoles that have made the NFL journey to Buffalo. But there’s not enough of them to score the required points he thinks it will take to beat the Bengals.

Jim Owczarski, one of The Cincinnati Enquirer beat men, notes the focus that has marked the Bengals’ unbeaten open and says it will be sharp enough to carry the day.

With an anticipated kick-off temperature of 41 degrees, let’s go around the camp fire with visitors, naturally, leading off:

EJ and Tyrod Close Teammates
There’s a decent chance that EJ Manuel has to start in place of an injured Tyrod Taylor, who is still a game time decision for Sunday’s game against undefeated Cincinnati. Working together all offseason the two coastal Virginia natives have developed a strong working relationship.

@hsimon62

ESPN just reported EJ will start. Sammy Watkins will start. LeSean McCoy will play but wont get a full load.

It makes sense that Shady is on a pitch count. Hopefully we draw up some good plays to get him to the second level.

I think Boom will get plenty of snaps too.

Bills source: don't expect full load for LeSean McCoy, not 100%, but I'm told he LOVES going against bigger (& slower) Ds like Bengals.

@AlbertBreer

Per source, Bengals CB Leon Hall will play today. That means all 53 players will be available for Cincy. 5-0, and the NFL's healthiest team.

What is this "health" you speak of?

Why Bills must break slow start trend
Over their last two games the Bills have gotten off to slow starts on offense. Part of the problem has been the absence of some of their top playmakers on offense, most notably LeSean McCoy and Sammy Watkins. There’s a good chance that both will be in the lineup Sunday against undefeated Cincinnati. Hopefully it helps to jump start an offense that has just one field goal combined in the first half of their last two games.

@4JoshReed

The Bengals allow 108 yards/gm on the ground. Ranked 18th in the NFL. LeSean McCoy expected to return. #Bills need that breakout game.

Bengals Eifert a headache in the red zone
The Cincinnati Bengals offense has taken off this season and many credit TE Tyler Eifert for being the piece that has put the unit over the top. Opposing defenses can no longer focus their attention on WR A.J. Green and just roll a safety over the top. They now need to account for Eifert, who has been carving up defenses in the middle of the field and the red zone.

It's mother's day in Argentina so I'll probably miss the start of the game but nothing can go wrong today, the Pumas beat Ireland soundly in the World Cup to secure a spot in the semifinals.

Bills see unbeaten team as measuring stick

It’s a team that is rolling right now. The Cincinnati Bengals are one of five remaining unbeatens in the NFL heading into Week 6. The Bills know if they can hang with this team it’ll say a lot about their fortunes for the 2015 season.

“It’s a big game for us. They’re hot, they’re playing well. They’ve been where we want to get,” said Richie Incognito. “They’ve been to the playoffs the last four years and it’s a good measuring stick for us to see exactly where we’re at because we gutted one out in Tennessee. We didn’t play as well as we wanted to play, we got the win. So coming in and playing a hot team like this that is rolling on offense and has a very sound defense, it’s a good test for us.”
