I believe that standard is a bit dated (not the philosophy though)...with punters seemingly having greater precision than ever these days, there's wiggle room there.

I'm willing to accept a fair catch at the 7 or 8 yard-line if it looks like the coverage team has a bead on the ball.

That's my take too.

But even if you disagree with that view, catching two punts at the 7-yard line is not grounds for cutting a player, and I doubt he was cut because of that.

So, some were saying Thigpen should be coached to not fair-catch balls on or inside the 10 yd line. Looks like maybe the coaches felt they coached him plenty and the coaching didn't take.

Moore was a pretty fast dude coming into the league. Does he return?

I can't find kickoff statistics on Cundiff. As a fieldgoal kicker he has, like....one, maybe two, good years out of many? Maybe the Bills feel he can kick-off as well as Gay but gives them an option if Carpenter doesn't get his sh** together. I agree that Conner Barth seems the better choice, but maybe he preferred to go to Tampa, and maybe he seems the better choice because he spent most of his career there?

I'd be surprised. He has a strong leg with at best questionable accuracy.

True, but his kick-off prowess is in vogue. Any team with poor kick coverage units this season can fix their issue with one signing -and a roster spot..

They didn't release him, and it seems he has an injury.

If that's the case, rest him for a week or two. He's a good kicker. I still trust him more than Cundiff with the game on the line.

Cant argue that point, but no other team besides the Bills carries a placekicker and a kickoff specialist.

I agree with this -- at least one week, anyway. The Bills "shouldn't" need him this week, but the game against Cincy next week could be critical.

Carpenter is an elite kicker that has had a small sample size of bad kicking while he has been injured.

Getting rid of Carpenter would be one of the most egregious moves ever made by the Buffalo Bills.

Exactly a booming kickoff means you can practically put rold gold eating fans from the end zone seats out there on coverage.

This summary of Cundiff from NFL.com doesn't make him sums any more accurate than gay would have been

Cundiff, 35, missed a rash of game-crushing kicks for the Browns last season and remains a cross-your-fingers performer beyond 30 yards. In a season full of gloomy kicker performances, Cundiff only adds to the drama.

It may be dated but I just don't value those 5 extra yards. To me, this isn't like not going for it on 4th down.

Field position....as in the difference between the opponent starting at their own 30 versus your 40..........is very important and if you can get the ball at the 20 even 1/4 of those times I let it drop and roll and take my chances.

As I posted elsewhere, I really hope I'm wrong, but I have a feeling Ryan's digs at Carpenter are telling. Regardless, they are ill-informed. Carpenter is without a doubt a better kicker than Cundiff, and I worry that emotion is driving decisions (which won't be a shock to some).

Cundiff is 8 of 30 on 50+ yard kicks. 8 of 30. Let that sink in.

Carpenter is 22-37 on 50+ yard kicks, and 2 for 3 this year.

Carpenter is a good kicker.
