BuffaloBillsForever
I love Rex. My only complaint is how Rex has treated Carpenter. It is all the more perplexing given how Rex tries to deflect any heat away from any other player (and typically on to himself). I find it all VERY perplexing too. YoloinOhio
I love Rex. My only complaint is how Rex has treated Carpenter. It is all the more perplexing given how Rex tries to deflect any heat away from any other player (and typically on to himself). as I think others have mentioned, it likely is rooted in the fact that he's only doing half the job to begin with and taking up two roster spots. In his (and likely whaley's) mind, he better be near perfect on FGs or it's not worth carrying him and a KO specialist. If he did both, he may get a little more slack. John from Riverside
Maybe Carpenter really is hurt? Let him heal up a bit and let Cundiff hold it for a bit
BuffaloBillsForever
Maybe Carpenter really is hurt? Let him heal up a bit and let Cundiff hold it for a bit Why wouldn't rex let that be known if that was true? Carpenter is going to be out so we signed Cundiff to take over? I would have no problem with that. Yet, instead, rex puts out all this morbid, passive aggressive stuff against carpenter to the media. Reed83HOF
Moreover, he choked on the biggest stage of all, costing the Ravens the game against the Pats in the AFC championship game. So it's settled, he fits in here...
sullim4
Great Pickup!! Cundiff, if consistent, is our new starting kicker, lets give him this week to try out. Kickers are a dime a dozen; Carp is a professional, he has to make the kicks, Imo This is the most ridiculous thing you've said in a long time. Kickers are not a dime a dozen. The only friggin bright spot on this team for the last fifteen years has been the kicking - lord knows this team's deplorable offense over that span has given the kicker plenty of opportunities at FGs rather than XPs. Nearly every other team in the NFL has struggled with getting a consistent kicker over that timespan, save maybe Belichick who lucked into Gostkowski after dropping Vinateri. If you truly believe that one week of Cundiff nailing field goals in a low pressure game against Tennessee makes him better than Carpenter over his career, then it worries me that someone that has some insider status with this team actually believes that. You have to go with the more consistent guy over his career unless the guy completely tanks over a period of several games. If there's a guy that's consistently good available via FA (like DC was a few years ago), then great. If not, and Cundiff has clearly demonstrated that he can't kick high pressure and long FGs, then you stick with what you have and pick up someone out of college with proven capability next year. Big Gun
No. Career, he's 8 for 30 from 50+. 52 of 71 in the 40-49 yard range. Reading between the lines, I think Carpenter must be hurting. Cundiff is basically going to be here for short FG's and extra points. To a degree this makes sense. Our special teams coverage has been pretty solid on KO and punts, so they're not going to keep 3 kickers on the roster. If the Bills were simply concerned with Carpenter's accuracy (assumes no injury), I think they would have released him outright. In regards to Denarius Moore, this gives me some concerns about Sammy. With Goodwin out as well, they really don't have a legitimate "stretch the field" type of guy. Thigpen has been a solid steaming pile, so letting him go doesn't hurt my feelings. The only reason the team signs a speedster though is if they think they need one and don't have one. Do we hear about an MRI on Sammy's hammy this week? Stay tuned. Umm, didn't Sammy hurt his calf? Big C
Like the Moore pickup, not crazy about Cundiff. One K will have to go when IK comes back, unless Carp gets IR'd, most likely. Cundiff has not been good. I hope Carp is healthy.
Luxy312
Umm, didn't Sammy hurt his calf? The point was really made as an analogy to McCoy. Shady hurt one of his hamstrings. After further evaluation, the Bills found a tear in the OTHER hamstring. My point is that we could easily see a situation with Watkins where we don't actually know exactly WHAT is ailing him. He's had hamstring issues before to boot.

Lets not over-react here... I was saying give Cundiff the week of practice, if consistant, he is our new starter. Its hard to carry three kickers in this league, one has to go. Cundiff just has to be average. Carp has been below. This should be a "no-brainer" for Whaley. Imo

Imo Carpenter is 5 for 7 and 2 of 3 on 50+ yard kicks. If he were to go, say, 3 for 3 on Sunday (a very real possibility) he'd be at 80 percent and above Cundiff's lousy lifetime percentage. It's this sort of thinking that makes the Bills inferior to the Patriots. They don't sweat the details. No decisions on kickers should ever be made in that context.

Belichick didn't luck into Gostkowski; he spent a high draft pick (4th round, which is very high for a kicker) on him. He values the position. He values the position because he's smart. A good kicker like Gostkowski or the kid in Baltimore will help win you a lot of games. It grates me how kickers, even good ones, get so little respect.
