What should the general guidelines be to remaking a movie? Certain age? How well recieved the first one was? How balanced it is between staying true to the first, yet still having originality? I just don't see why they feel they gotta remake a good thing.

I just don't see why they feel they gotta remake a good thing. It's simple Joe. Brand recognition. It's why a movie like Star Trek blows any "original" sci-fi movie out of the water.

It's all about mitigating financial risks for the studios these days. Marketing departments rather than development departments, are the ones calling the shots when it comes to green lights. I have no problem with remakes by themselves, I have issues when the only new studio movies being made are remakes or adaptations of existing ip.
