Kelly the Dog Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 It's way too early and I guess it could change after the Sunday and Monday games, but the Bills are the top rushing team in the league at 152 yards a game (thanks, TT) as well as the top rushing defense at 74.

Enormous difference when it is 2nd and 7-8 versus 2nd and 4-5. The huge difference in the bills defense last year versus 2013 was the ability to stop the run.

Brady and BB had to pass at the end of last game because the run was so ineffective. That kept us in the game; although not enough. I honestly think if they had gone to a run centric offense we would have completed the comeback.

smapdi Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 The Incognito signing was huge. He really has solidified this line & been a major part of the run game's success. He was #2 rated linemen goimg into today and I dont see that going anywhere but up after his performance today. He has been blowing up holes for the RBs and making life much easier for Glenn and Wood. He had the key block on Williams 41 yard TD. The run defense had been top notch. Preston Brown is turning into an elite ILB & is the cherry on top of this front 7. Being able to stifle the run game makes things so much easier on a defense. You get plenty of 3rd and longs where the defense can pin it's ears back and go hard aftet QB.

And Belicheck used to be a defensive guy. I think he startred adapting to the new NFL during the '07 offseason after losing to Indy in the AFC Championship.

There is no QB in the league that plays like Brady. None. There are a couple guys as good perhaps, like Rodgers. But no one can play the short passing game like Brady. He's insanely accurate on those which is the only reason it works. Edelman wouldn't be half as good on any other team but he is fabulous on the Patriots because he is so tough and quick and Brady is so accurate. On no oth team does that work. You can't play that offense without Brady though.
Doug Flutie Band Posted September 28, 2015 Posted September 28, 2015 That's a great accomplishment. If they can consistently run the ball and stop the run, they will be tough to beat. That's also a great formula to take the pressure of the QB and help the development of Tyrod.

My issue with stats is that they can be misleading - The Cheatriots didn't need to run the whole game with their passing game and Miami had to pass to play catch up. That's ridiculous. I like these stats better because as we saw yesterday.. garbage time yards are just that. Being efficient throwing and defending the pass and then forcing the opponent out of the threat of the running game, and putting up rushing yards yourself wins a lot of games! Even with the Patriots passing attack, when they can run on you, that's what they'll do all game. Evidence: The infamous "43's the Mike" game 3 years ago where they pummeled us up the middle every play while Bryan Scott was at LB. Sure, it's a pass happy league. It also may just mean teams are opting to throw instead, perhaps because it's a better match for them(NEP) and perhaps because they are too far behind on the scoreboard. Since the offense has jumped out to such huge leads early in the two wins, the opposing teams switched to throwing. And the pats, while quite the opposite, did very little running regardless of the scoreboard. The more meaningful indicator of the defense is that they are 4th best in avg passing yards per attempt despite having the most attempts against. The run d statistically allows a very average 4.3 yards per carry. Make no mistake, this defense is very good against the passing game thus far, and that has led to these two first half blowouts in conjunction with outstanding offensive execution. As a side note, they better start grooming Romans replacement. Because if this continues, he'll be getting a promotion in 2016 sending him elsewhere. This is still significant and being able to stop the run is important, especially when an opposing team is ahead and trying to run the clock and in short-yardage situations. But, here's a scary stat: The Bills have the 30th ranked D in yards allowed per game. Rex is usually in the Top Ten. And the Bills had the personnel to finish in the Top Five last year. What's going on? The Bills offense, in contrast, is #10. Who would have expected that the Bills O would be far ahead of the Bills D in the rankings after three games?
