QB Index: What teams need a new QB in 2016?

Ryan Fitzpatrick has found success with Chan Gailey and the Jets. As an impending free agent, what teams might want his services as they look for new blood next year? Find out in the QB Index.

Buffalo Bills: Rex Ryan is in a far better spot at quarterback than he was a year ago. Tyrod Taylor has earned the right to keep starting, and he's under contract for cheap next season. (The third year of his contract has voided, so he's signed through 2016.) EJ Manuel should be on the trade block and we wouldn't be surprised to see the Bills draft another quarterback to eventually compete with Taylor.

So now we get to guess who the Bills will trade EJ to and what they will get in return.

Which QBs will be available in 2016?

We took a look last week at the teams that will be looking for quarterbacks in 2016. Now let's look at what players could be available at the most important position in sports.

Trade candidates

Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints: He's still playing like a top-10 quarterback, so he has plenty of value. He is also entering the final year of his contract and could theoretically be packaged with coach Sean Payton if some team wanted to give the Saints a Godfather offer. A monster trade, though, is hard to imagine because of timing. The coaching carousel spins far earlier than free agency, and any team interested in Brees would have to work out a new contract with him.

It's also hard to imagine owner Tom Benson trading away the player that brought a Super Bowl to New Orleans, but it does make football sense. Brees' value will never be higher and he is set to count $30 million against the cap, a number that will have to be addressed in some way. He would be a fascinating fit for a team that believes they could win now like the Jets or Bills.

EJ Manuel, Bills: Tyrod Taylor should be the Bills' quarterback of 2016. It's past time for general manager Doug Whaley to admit a mistake in drafting Manuel. Some team could give up a late round pick for him.

QB Index Awards

As the 2015 regular season comes to a close, NFL Media's Gregg Rosenthal hands out his annual awards for the league's 32 starting quarterbacks.

Toughest to evaluate: Tyrod Taylor

The signing of Taylor was the most tangible positive Rex Ryan brought to Buffalo. Rex's favorite beat out general manager Doug Whaley's first round pick (EJ Manuel) in camp, and then put together a terrific season for a first-time starter. Taylor still needs to develop, and it almost makes me uncomfortable how high he lands in my amateur grading system. I have to knock him down a few pegs because of the eye test.

I'm not the only one high on Taylor. ESPN QBR ranks him as the sixth-best quarterback in football, and Pro Football Focus has him 10th. He's the best runner at the position and can throw the deep ball. Despite all that, Taylor came up small in too many big moments throughout the season. He can hold the ball forever. We hope he doesn't eventually go the way of Bills offensive coordinator Greg Roman's last pupil.

Tier tough to separate

Ryan Tannehill and Johnny Football are faves of one of our resident QB gurus. Interesting that they are at the bottom quarter of the rankings.

Which should tell you something about gurus. There are gurus and then there are gurus...

In all honestly......while the accolades have been great and the crit has been strong

Only one thing matters now....how is Tyrod going to play NEXT year.

Needs to continue to develop his game

He has the smarts and work ethic to do just that. Arrow Up.
