I don't know if I buy this quote from Rex. Joe Buscaglia reported it and he's a hack. Dude didn't even play football himself.

Ooh, you almost got me.

Those were some harsh words from Rex.

But at least it wasn't the worst PI in history of NFL.

Well, regardless, Duke's teammates were screaming at him after the play, both on the field and on the sideline, and for quite awhile.

Indeed...that reeks of "you had one job!"

it makes me want to watch the Pats the rest of the season to see what other teams do against Gronk.

Almost.

Well, we did one step better than the Steelers and at least lined someone up to cover him. It was everything after the ball was snapped that we screwed up. :bag::P

On that play, the Pats ran the exact same formation and shift as they did against Pitt, but in the Pitt game Gronk broke toward the sideline and caught the td in the corner. That's what Gilmore was covering (sensibly so). Gronk broke inside this time, and obviously someone else has to cover the inside. That didn't happen.

So, week two, what's Landry been up to?

yea Bradham went nuts on Duke on that Gronk TD. obviously expecting him to pick up the coverage. i felt bad for Duke at the time because i don't think teammates should go after each other that much on the field but if he didn't do his job then i could see why

Maybe they know Duke doesn't spend time in the film room enough, then tells them "I got it" when they ask if he knows his assignments, then in games routinely blows them. That would piss me off too...

Maybe he spends time in the wrong film room?

hughes covered Gronk better than anyone

Ahhh,... while I appreciate his effort, Hughes was lucky he wasn't called for Pass Interference on that play. He has no business being sent downfield trying to cover Gronkowski... they need to rethink that

was he lucky because he is Hughes and it didn't get called, or because you thought it was PI? Didn't look like PI to me... Edited by YoloinOhio

This pretty much confirms that Duke Williams screwed up. From Belichick's interview: http://www.patriots.com/news/2015/09/21/bill-belichick-conference-call-transcript-921.

Q: The touchdown to Rob Gronkowski looked similar to the formation we saw last week. What did you see on that play?Read

BB: I'm not sure exactly what happened on their end. It looked like they were trying to go three-on-two over there to the slot side and they didn't get it, and Rob got inside. The rest of the game they did go three-on-two on that. It's probably what they were trying to do on that play, but they did go three-on-two, and we ended up a couple times going back to the other side to Scott Chandler, where the one-on-one matchup was. But we unfortunately didn't hit it. But they went three-on-two on those plays as well over to the slot side. So, I think that's what they were trying to do, but Rob got inside on it and Tom [brady] hit him. It was a pretty easy touchdown. That's what it looked like to me.

He's the Mulligan of the defense. No doubt about it. He's terrible, has been terrible in every opportunity he has got on the field, and will, most likely, always be terrible. Time to find a replacement.
