TSN Mid-Season Draft Ranking topped by Big Three

Now that is what you call consensus.

Auston Matthews is not only No. 1 on TSN’s Mid-Season 2016 NHL Draft Rankings – 10 out of 10 scouts surveyed by TSN had the big American centre on top – but the Swiss League scoring machine heads up this year’s Big Three that includes Finnish twin towers Patrik Laine (2) and Jesse Puljujarvi (3).

Not a single scout surveyed by TSN had any player other Matthews, Laine or Puljujarvi in their top three.

Here’s what you need to know about this year’s draft and TSN’s mid-season rankings:

Here are Bob McKenzie's mid-season rankings. Enjoy.

and Carlton Bailey's son. So Joe B's sister married Carlton Bailey?

No. Had a baby with him. I don't think Carlton had much to do with Justin, but she lived in that hockey hotbed of East Amherst and Peca and others taught him how to play hockey.

2-10: TSN's TRAVIS YOST ON WGR (23:26)

Yost: "Felt this year would be a bridge year until they [sabres] start contending. Still think team can finish high 70s/low 80s in points."

Yost: "First measuring stick for this team comes in 2016-17."

Yost: "Next year they have to be at least at the 80 point threshold if not closer to 90 which would get them close to the playoffs."

Yost: "If you've got the right guys in charge you can movie up 10-12 points in the standings quickly. A lot of opportunity in offseason."

Yost: "I'm surprised we have heard more about the Sabres in the Jonathan Drouin talks. That's the type of player they want to target."

I always enjoy hearing his perspective on the Sabres and other matters in the NHL.

@JourdonLaBarber

Justin Bailey's coaches in Rochester were being extra hard on him at the end of practice yesterday. He wondered why. http://sabres.nhl.com/club/news.htm?id=868297&navid=DL|BUF|home

@WGR550

Sabres' Bailey is glad his first game is in Philadelphia http://bit.ly/1ovpSo5

With three games in four nights, the morning skate was optional so we don’t know what line Bailey will play on. Dan Bylsma said, “I think much like we used Dan Catenacci the last game, there’s going to be a few times where we’ll look to get him in different spots in the lineup with different guys. We moved Ryan to the left side, we moved Jack and McGinn for about six shifts last game which means there’s going to be shuffling of the other lines and Justin will probably get a few shifts to try to show his speed up on another line.”

Both Nick Deslauriers and Matt Moulson were off the fourth line against Florida and neither had a good game.

Eichel missed practice on Wednesday, but is ready to play. Bylsma said Johan Larsson isn’t on the trip, but could play Friday at home against Montreal. After being put on injured reserve, Zemgus Girgensons can’t play until Sunday’s home game. Mike Weber and Carlo Colaiacovo appear to be the healthy scratches.

The Sabres have lost three straight and have only won two of eight. There were 16 points available in those games and the Sabres snagged six of them.

Robin Lehner will be back in goal after having his first bad game as a Sabre. Lehner let in four goals in 20:22 against the Panthers and was pulled. That ballooned his goals against to 2.65.

A year later: Sabres and Jets both benefited from Kane mega-trade

One day it was a troubling combination of a pit in your stomach and the headache, not the debilitating one, but the one that’s barely there but never seems to go away.

Then the next day, one year ago today, it was all gone, replaced by promise on so many fronts.

This was the bottom line for the Winnipeg Jets and GM Kevin Cheveldayoff, who sent intractable winger Evander Kane, defenceman Zach Bogosian and prospect goalie Jason Kasdorf to the Buffalo Sabres for winger Drew Stafford, defenceman Tyler Myers, prospects Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux and a first-round draft pick that became Miami (Ohio) centre Jack Roslovic.

Transaction day was the end of a 10-day period of acute turmoil with the Jets, the need for some kind of deal brought to a head by the events of Feb. 3, 2015 in Vancouver.

Is he going to wear #54?

Does anyone know if he's going to wear #54? I realize he's not too well connected to his dad but it give him a unique number if he ever amounts to anything.
