Buffalo Barbarian Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 Top goalies don't come from the draft. Generally goalies take a long time to develop. The NHL draft isn't like the NFL draft. It's pretty much accepted that you don't take a goalie in the first round. I see, so what do we need from this draft?
26CornerBlitz Posted November 1, 2015 Author Posted November 1, 2015 I see, so what do we need from this draft? A top defenseman would be great.
Alaska Darin Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I see, so what do we need from this draft? There won't be anything from this draft that will benefit this team next season, unless we end up with Matthews. You simply don't pick players in the NHL draft with the expectation that they're going to help you in the short term. Even the best generally take 2 seasons to help you in the NHL. Reinhardt is a good example - he's a work in progress and he was number 2 overall 2 years ago. Eichel is clearly not the norm. GMTM will likely continue going BPA with the highest ceiling. That's how successful hockey teams are built. If we want to continue improving, its about that and development of guys like Fasching, Bàiley, Baptiste,Ruhwedel, and Guhle while spending wisely in free agency.

K-9 Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 true but we can't keep taking centers every time right? All centers can play the wing but not vice-versa, so if a center is BPA, take him every time. GO SABRES!!!

GO SABRES!!! makes sense. do you think we will be bad enough to get a guy like Matthews? That's true the carey price top goalie pick is the exception not norm. Its common to snag a guy in 54th found let him develop for 3 to 5 year's and he's a starter Why do goalies take so long to develop, aren't they doing the same thing they always do to play the position?
K-9 Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 makes sense. do you think we will be bad enough to get a guy like Matthews? Why do goalies take so long to develop, aren't they doing the same thing they always do to play the position? I think we will be contending for the last playoff spot; I really do. But if we end up missing it, I don't think we will have high odds in the draft lottery so I think we won't have a realistic shot at AM. It would be great though. As for goalies, they are just a weird breed but the NHL is just so unlike anything they have seen previously it's no wonder it takes them a while. Same with Dmen, usually. GO SABRES!!!
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 What exactly constitutes bylsma's system? Shoot the puck as often as humanly possible?
Alaska Darin Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 What exactly constitutes bylsma's system? Shoot the puck as often as humanly possible? Bylsma's "system" is about moving the puck quickly when transitioning from defense to offense. It's about getting the puck to the forwards with speed so they can enter the offensive zone on the fly. It's a difficult thing in the NHL because it requires puck moving defensemen and forwards with high skill level. Why do goalies take so long to develop, aren't they doing the same thing they always do to play the position? There are only two goalies on an NHL game roster. There are 12 forwards and 6 defensemen. Numbers alone mean there are more limited opportunities and most teams aren't going to give a spot to a young goalie who would be better off playing every night in the AHL or ECHL. Additionally, you can hide a young defensemen or forward by matching up. No such luck with a goaltender. Keep in mind that most of these guys being drafted are teenagers. They're not physically or emotionally mature, which is why most of them don't see a game in the NHL until they are 22 or 23. The grind of playing 50+ games in the NHL wears down young players pretty quick and if you struggle at all mentally the process accelerates. Projecting a goalie is probably equivalent to projecting a QB. It's just very difficult to know where an 18 year old is going to end up 5 or 6 years later.
eball Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 For those who follow the developmental aspect of the game -- is Ullmark a legitimate potential #1 G?
4merper4mer Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 For those who follow the developmental aspect of the game -- is Ullmark a legitimate potential #1 G? I think the Sabres retired that number when Don Edwards hung them up.
sodbuster Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 I think Kasdorf could be pretty good in a couple of years.
drinkTHEkoolaid Posted November 1, 2015 Posted November 1, 2015 For those who follow the developmental aspect of the game -- is Ullmark a legitimate potential #1 G? He is very young and raw but he definitely has the potential to. Again we won't know for quite some time. Right now where he is in his development curve and his age he is progressing more quickly than most goalie prospects so that is encouraging. He has been playing in the sweedish men's professional league compared to his peers playing in Canadian juniors or the NCAA. That may give him an early advantage.

He's also been through quite a lot -- surgery on both hips I understand? Should be mentally tough.
