metzelaars_lives Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 Yet you're sure Cassel will look better than he's looked the past 4 years? Cassel would have been on IR after the first quarter in that Houston game. No, I would've kept Cassel as my #3. I just really think they're rolling the dice with their first and second options. And I love Tyrod Taylor. I'm glad he won the job, I think he clearly earned the job and I can't wait to watch him play on Sunday. And it's not like I own a Matt Cassel fathead. I just liked him as insurance. That's it.
metzelaars_lives Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 No one claims him at his salary. You are correct.
BobChalmers Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 No one is going to claim him at any salary.
Kelly the Dog Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 No one is going to claim him at any salary. You can only claim him at his salary. Otherwise you have to negotiate a new one. Someone will sign him, although it may not be until after week one.
metzelaars_lives Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 No one is going to claim him at any salary. Here we go. Yes they are. He is not going to sit out this season. From all accounts, he looked good in camp and in his four preseason series, he looked fine. Dumping him was a salary cap move, plain and simple. Once his 2016 salary is nullified and he becomes a free agent (is that how it works, I'm not really even sure), he will sign with someone as a #2. I just don't understand why half of you guys are so obsessed with constantly spewing venom at this guy.

From all accounts, he looked good in camp and in his four preseason series, he looked fine. Dumping him was a salary cap move, plain and simple. That isn't quite true is it? It was a decision over balance of the roster as well. He went from presumptive started to #3 QB and hence his contract went from looking cheap to looking expensive. Salary cap factored into the decision, sure, but so did that fact that both the other guys outplayed him. If EJ had looked as bad as we might have expected him to given the opinion of some people around here then he would be gone even with the salary cap ramifications and Cassel would still be here as back up. It was a combination of the largest salary plus the least production. EDIT: He will certainly get signed by someone but I am not sure he sees the field this year to be honest and having been in starting job competitions each of the last 4 years I think that he is probably past that now and he only gets another shot somewhere as an out and out backup behind a solid starter. And I am not one of the "Meh" crew either before I am accused of that. I was suggesting Cassel as a vet to back up / compete with EJ in spring 2014 before he re-signed with the Vikings and we signed Orton. Edited September 6, 2015 by GunnerBill
Thurmal34 Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 Dumping Fred and Cassel, if it leads to an extension of Dareus, is the right move every day of the week and twice a month.

It would not have bothered me if they they kept him......but the bills have managed to clear over 15 million in cap before the start of the season.....lets see what they do withit No one is going to claim him at any salary. I think that is a bit over the top.....QBs are so hard to find and he did not look bad in preseason.
Luxy312 Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 Nobody claims Cassel and he starts the season as a free agent. At the end of the day, what's his value at this point? He knows exactly two playbooks, Buffalo and Minnesota. The Vikings have moved on and now so has Buffalo. I neither like or dislike him, but recognize him for what he is. He's a journeyman quarterback that had one good year each with the Patriots and Chiefs and otherwise average career. Barring a major injury on a team without a reliable backup (of which there's few), his career may be over.

metzelaars_lives Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 If you think that's a reasonable policy, your agent for home, life, and/or auto must love renewing you I wouldn't have kept Matt Cassel as my #3 if Andrew Luck was my #1 and Matt Hasselbeck was my #2. We are in a little bit of a different situation here. And I understand not keeping him because of his contract too. I guess in an ideal world, they would've negotiated his contract in half and they could've kept him. You realize when I say this that I'm talking about keeping him at the expense of a Matthew Mulligan or whoever the fifth tight end is. I sincerely hope this does not come back to bite them.

Mulligan has a definite role on this team though as a specialist blocking TE. O'Leary is the 5th and I agree that seems overkill... but I am not sure it was 5th TE vs 3rd QB. It was pay 3rd QB $4.5million or don't carry a 3rd QB. That was the real choice. Only once that decision was made would they have started thinking about how to fill that spot. Ever since they published the over/under on the number of minutes it would take for you to jump to Meh's defense everyone wants a piece of the action.

Framing it as cassel vs mulligan, given how often your here, is ridiculous. Yea it frees up a roster spot, but it's about the cap space and you know it. You also know you can't wiggle your nose and make him agree to take less. He's a guy we traded for (ie he might not want to be here in the first place) and probably wants a shot to play (probably won't happen here).
