Does he really think players like Dareus are a "dime a dozen"?

Probably not. But I wonder what Buffett thinks about "dime a dozen" columnists?

Sully should voluntarily add 50% to his Guild dues and thank his lucky stars he's "protected"...

@spotrac

As Dareus’ contract details trickle in (h/t @Rand_Getlin/@RapSheet) it sounds like the #Bills will only lose about $400k in 2015 cap space.

@RapSheet

Finally examining Marcell Dareus’ extension. Whopping $28M in 1st-year cash, nearly $20M more than he was scheduled to make. Most for any DT

@Rand_Getlin

Over the first two new years of Dareus' deal, he'll see $45M or so. Nearly $15M (!!) more than if he'd been franchise tagged back-to-back.

Yes. Anyone have a clue? B-)

@spotrac

Somewhat difficult to tell where the #Bills have decided to allocate the bulk of their $ right now (Combined AAV).

Interesting to note that 3 out of the 4 Bills big D-Line contracts were re-signings. Kyle Williams and Dareus were draft choices while Hughes was a great and rare player for player trade. Only Mario was an outsider brought in. Good player development.

It's sad that QB is the smallest little circle.

Belichick bugged Pete Carrol's headset.

Fact

Does anyone have the latest cash-to-cap calculations? I'm a little concerned we won't be able to buy gatorade for the game Sunday.

I have been wondering the crunched numbers too.

Keep spending Terry.

Its a salary cap. its not Terry's loose change drawer Allan.

Actually, one of the advantages the Pegulas have brought to the Sabres and the Bills is the willingness to frontload contracts which allows the players to actually earn more money by investing that years earlier than otherwise. There are a number of teams that use "cash to cap" which prevent them from spending cash in that manner despite the cap hit being spread out.

It also makes said contracts much more attractive in a trade because much of the cash has been paid out. In addition, it makes restructuring more enticing to a player because they received a lot of the cash from the existing deal and a new deal would give them more cash while helping the teams cap situation.

jeremy , that is an excellent point!

But isn't that part of better financial management as compared to willingness to spend?

I realize that Pegula spent and spent well on Coaches. and thats a huge swing at the fences that connected IMO

Giants won 2 recent Super bowls with strength at Dline. Baltimore recently had Ngata & Suggs. Patriots early Super bowls Seymour was their best player and added Wilfork.

Giants had about half of the Bills investment in those dlines.

Regarding "dime a dozen comment":

Only people (like Sully) who are looking to be offended (or feign offense) pretended to be offended.

He was going through the negotiation process. Very simple. It also does not look like he held out for every last nickel (or in this case dime) in agreeing to the deal that is being reported.

I wasn't offended. But I was taken aback by the idiocy of someone willing to say something so mind-numbingly stupid out loud, much less in front of cameras. Calling it a negotiating tactic does not change the fact that it was a stupid one.

This one particularly points to the fact that they are trying to set this team up for winning for many years by moving that cap hit further down the road rather than playing the cash-to-cap game as a crutch.

If the salary cap jumps a lot....and of course if Dareus plays well....the deal doesn't impede them in the next few seasons.

Lost in all the hoopla about the Patriots winning the SB last year, if Lynch is given the ball at the goal line, I think people actually look a bit closer at the many years of salary cap shrewdness that probably cost Brady quite a few more chances at SB's.

Now that teams have to spend over X% (like 90%) on a rolling average there's really not much difference like once upon a time

The only real perk is big guarantees have to be funded at time of signing, so extra liquidity is nice if you have a couple stack up close
