GunnerBill Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 This isn't conspiracy. This is either bias, incompetence, petulance, intrasigence, or ingorance of the NFL game. Or, perhaps a combination of all. Hear, hear, hear.
Deranged Rhino Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 (edited) Excellent post. Whaley's contract most likely expires after the 2015 season and his decisions need to work out quickly. And now that he's sharing power with Rex, it's interesting to see who stays and who goes. A lot of the guys he's drafted/signed/extended are either not here or not starting. I count 9 starters on offense, 4 on defense (not counting the guys he was around as asst. GM for), and all three specialists. That's 16 out of a possible 24 starting positions filled out under Whaley's GMship. Edited September 5, 2015 by GreggyT
OCinBuffalo Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Don't worry about it, I don't read you. Stop writing posts that attempt to marginalize the obvious bias, by substituting what we aren't saying: conspiracy, for what we are: bias, and you won't even have to make that choice, because I won't have a reason to post about this anymore. I count 9 starters on offense, 4 on defense (not counting the guys he was around as asst. GM for), and all three specialists. Heh, I was gonna get around to this one. Thanks for saving me the trouble. I've been busy marginalizing the marginalizers.
Rob's House Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 all I am saying is that with the 20/20 vision of retrospect a smart football brain would have assessed 1. Take Rex at his word that all 3 QBs were candidates for the #1 job with the results to be proven on the field in practice and in games. In addition to this more objective assessment, subjectively it was clear that Ryan had great hopes for TT (but these hopes had yet to emerge), Rex had hopes for Cassel as a player proven to lead a team to the playoffs BUT real doubts existed as to whether he was good enuf to be the man (it was clearly Meh's job to take but he had not shown enuf recently to be given the job. Also, EJ was always a hopeful project but these hopes had not been realized due to his inconsistent play. Nevertheless, he clearly was a quality guy, good athlete and though he had disappointed the old regime were clearly idiots so he gets a shot. 2. After initial practices and game 1- No one had taken the job of the 3. Cassel- Has shown he can perform consistently though inadequately. Only remains #1 on depth chart because neither TT nor EJ has taken the job. TT- Showed signs of life after game 1(though little besides he keeps looking to pass when flushed. EJ- Great bomb for a score but occaissional teeth grating misfires. Showed best upside so far Bills reporting and fan chatter- Starting to get excited and but mindlessly keeps hope in Meh despite little objective evidence. Also, mindlessly remains disappointed in EJ. 3. After Game 2 Poor practices have braintrust satisfied Cassel is not the answer but in the absence of EJ and TT neither taking the job or playing themselves of the roster Meh is not an unreasonable plan B. Coaching staff decides to give all 3 a go with starters and EJ earns the first look in game 3 with his two scoring passes to win game 2. Reporters and fans with little football knowledge judge Meh still #1 though he has done little to take the job. Coaches say who cares they have work to do. 4. After Game 3 T-Mobile takes the job. EJ performs outstandingly and wins the #2 job. Meh disappoints so badly (he not only did nothing to take the job but is lucky that bad hands by a Pitts DB didn't cost him a pick 6. A number of reporters and some foolish fans still have Meh as #1 when in reality its only matter of time until he is told don't let the door hit him on the way out. I think it is clear in retrospect that anyone who wants to claim superior analysis or knowledge about the Bills should have seen tis coming. I don't claim perfect knowledge but at least I know what I don't know. For a lot of these guys, their job is to make these predictions throughout the process. If they came on everyday saying "I don't know" it may help their credibility, but it would destroy their ratings. I don't think most of It was that outlandish. It seems to be the general consensus that Cassel came in as the presumptive veteran starter and TT impressed from the get go as Rex's hand-picked hope, and that EJ struggled through most of camp and then came on strong toward the end. Whether the FO wanted to keep a veteran with a high floor for security or save cap space and go with lower floor, higher ceiling options was anyone's guess. It's unfair to, with the benefit of hindsight, trash them for not being clairvoyant.

John from Riverside Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 (edited) If EJ Manuel and Matt Cassel reversed their salaries, then I think EJ would have been cut. if if and buts were candy and nuts I also believe Whaley wants to keep EJ Manuel so that people don't accuse him of drafting a 1st round bust. He tends to defend his trades and draft picks rather than admitting his mistakes. ALL GMS MAKE trades and draft decisions that do not work out.....the majority of Doug Whaley's have. And it is not uncommon for GMs to back their own decisions. He has also sent trades packing early. For the record, experience has taught me over the years that pre-season performances by QB's mean NOTHING! I've seen every Bills QB play since 1960. They do when they improve from year to year There are a lot of conclusions being drawn about these QB's based on insignificant data. I still haven't seen EJ Manuel do well against a decent defense in a regular season game. Until proven otherwise, Manuel is still a questionable 1st round pick. If he never becomes a solid stater in the NFL then it is certainly a wasted pick. Time will tell. The odds favor bust over boom at this point. Go ahead and discount EJs performance this preseason when the numbers back up that he has in fact played at a more efficient rate. Edited September 5, 2015 by John from Hemet

KRT88 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 So where are the Bills going for a 3rd QB? Gotta believe they will bring in someone
Doc Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Mallett didn't look bad in the 3rd game. bullets. He didn't? So where are the Bills going for a 3rd QB? Gotta believe they will bring in someone I'm assuming Simms, on the PS.
Nihilarian Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Again: you have to be proud of EJ for stepping up and sticking it to Leroi fighting to keep his roster spot. and Metz, who loved Matt Cassel more then an average fan should. EJ led the NFL in passing for the pre season, and really was the only Bills QB to find the end zone with his arm game after game.
Agent 91 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Man, I liked what I saw out of Red Bryant a whole lot more than Alex Carrington... You saw Carrington do something?
Nihilarian Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 WGR on air experts are curled up in a fetal position right now. yea, and those jackasses need to find jobs where they actually need to know what they are talking about.
Agent 91 Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Apparently yes you can get hoes in a row. And they come in various flavors depending on your tastes. Lol wooooooooooooooord!!!!!
Saxum Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 I'll remember. Don't you forget...when I call you a !@#$ing idiot next Sunday, I want you to remember why. Maybe the only ones he can find to !@#$ are idiots? #Overpaid3rdstringersdon'tmatter @stupidhashtagsdon'tmatter
TSOL Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Maybe the only ones he can find to !@#$ are idiots? That's the second time you've tried to get cute with me Kool Aide, I'm not gonna let you off the hook forever. But good one, you're funny.
Fixxxer Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 You saw Carrington do something? I can't remember Carrington's play, good or bad, during pre-season.
BillsFan-4-Ever Posted September 5, 2015 Posted September 5, 2015 Again: you have to be proud of EJ for stepping up and sticking it to Leroi fighting to keep his roster spot.
Saxum Posted September 6, 2015 Posted September 6, 2015 I am not saying that YOU are saying this....only that I have seen enough of it on the board People need to get behind Tyrod Taylor and hope we have something special there......EJ isnt going anywhere....lets all root for Tyrod to become that young Michel Vick type player (the guy that was drafted number 1 overall) TT is bigger, has a better arm, broke most of Vick's college records....... Lets hope TT becomes that player for us Don't listen to WGR so much.
