Ummm... I want to clarify, I only work in Hellmira, I live in Horseheads. Yup... there is a drug, welfare and gun problem in Elmira. It's turned into a real shithole.

Niagara Falls, too, unfortunately.

I've lived in Chemung County all my 55 years and grew up in Elmira. It's unreal and sad to see what happened there. It also looks like a third world country.

Niagara Falls NY looks like it belongs in some third world country

We visited Niagara Falls this past summer and I thought i was in downtown Mumbai. Garbage strewn streets and aside from a few pizza places, there were indian restaurants and tourist trap gift shops everywhere. Talk about third world country.....what a disgrace.

i get the garbage but what do you have against indian food? a good, hot lamb pasanda and a cold kingfisher are tough to beat. but i'm sad to hear about nf. last time i was there the como restaurant had gone from a nice sit down family place to a take out joint. whole town looked like hard times had hit a while ago. but tourist trap gift shops have been there longer than i've been alive and that's a fer piece. and yup, a very hard life is evident for the 2 pictured working ladies.

WTF? Indian food is a bad thing? And you do know tourist trap shops are a staple of ANY tourist area--right? Go across the border to the thrving NF Ontario area, and you will see many times the Indian, Thai, Chinese, etc restaurants and 100 times the tourist traps. One problem in Niagara Falls is there aren't enough Indian restaurants or tourist trap shops. Flutie Flakes, you sound like a xenophobic not job.

The problem in Niagara Falls is very complicated. There is plenty of blame to go around for many groups. But the main issue with NF is the lack of job opportunities.

Desperate times in the Southern Tier.

I have a whole slew of relatives that reside in "the valley" as they affectionately refer. It's been desperate times as long as I can remember.

Cuomo screwed over the whole Southern Tier when he blocked fracking for gas. The ironic thing was he announced the fracking ban and the casino license for the southern tier being at a place on the NYS Thruway. Apparently he not only doesn't care about the ST he also is very bad about geography. He of course hid behind committees that announced both decisions. Also the guy hasn't set foot in Chemung County since becoming governor, but Schumer and Gillibrand seem to have no problem finding us.

The gas is still in the ground. Tracking technology, techniques and costs are improving daily. The Saudis thought they would kill the industry. They've probably caused it to get stronger for the long term.
