Nitro Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) I have no beef with Fred being cut. Football is a harsh business. Over the years favorites were cut or released only to sign with another team before calling it a career. Names like Bruce Smith, Andre Reed and Thurman Thomas come to mind. I like Fred and his lunch bucket work ethic. Age and injury took its toll. If McCoy was not a Bill, I believe they would have kept him. It was a good career and he is beloved by the fans. I hope Fred catches on and has a good season. Fred Jackson will be one of the fan all time favorites. Edited August 31, 2015 by Nitro
eball Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 (edited) If he was good enough to keep, why wasn't he good enough to trade? Umm...he wasn't good enough to keep, and his trade value is non-existent. The Bills actually did the most respectful thing possible under the circumstances. As soon as the NFL announces 70-man rosters, then teams can begin keeping older players who "deserve" to be on the team when they make the playoffs. Edited August 31, 2015 by eball
Kelly the Dog Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Reading the tea leaves, the two main reasons the Bills cut Fred are roster related (didn't want to cut the other RBs) and salary related (free up cap $ to extend others). They think he can still play, but (primary) not at the expense of the other guys and (secondary) not at his salary. I don't think anyone in the history of the world can, with any consistency, read tea leaves and then predict the future. It's fortune telling at its worst. After a cup of tea has been poured, without using a tea strainer, the tea is drunk or poured away. The cup should then be shaken well and any remaining liquid drained off in the saucer. The diviner now looks at the pattern of tea leaves in the cup and allows the imagination to play around [with] the shapes suggested by them. They might look like a letter, a heart shape, or a ring. These shapes are then interpreted intuitively or by means of a fairly standard system of symbolism, such as: snake (enmity or falsehood), spade (good fortune through industry), mountain (journey of hindrance), or house (change, success).
KD in CA Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Recyclables! How funny!I Let's just say I might have done it on a different day... That would have been Fred's day. I remember so many days when Fred was literally the only thing happening on offense... Of course he was on his way out... I would ve let him go out differently. They did do it on a different day -- today. Cut down day is tomorrow and that's when the media will be looking around the league at other cuts. And they had a press conference about it. And they did it early to maximize his chance of signing elsewhere. What more do you want?
Pine Barrens Mafia Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Wow. Who was better this preseason? Man, we'll miss you FredEx.
Bad Things Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Thank you for all of your great effort, Fred. For years, you were the only shining light during very dark times. God bless.
flmike Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Just watched the presser with Whaley. What a waste of time. He essentially says "it was a hard decision" but wouldn't explain his reasoning. "Competitiveness reasons?" What a load. Exactly what edge is a team going to get if he gives the reasons? Maybe it gives Fred a better chance to get hired if they don't disclose? I want him to answer the question regarding how you go into the last preseason game cutting your only healthy veteran running back. First rule of press conferences. Don't schedule one if you are not answering any questions.
Augie Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 Thank you Fred! Best of luck to you and I look forward to seeing you go up on the Wall. (If you do sign with the Pats, I hope it's just to go under cover and expose them for what they are.)

Plus they did it after they started him in the most recent preseason game, which allows him to showcase to other teams that he's not hurt and can play.

More considration for what Fred did while he was here... ideally, I would have preferred more separation between him and the scrubs that were easy decisions..... Although, in the last few hours the acolades seem to be rolling in... There's a chance I wasn't the only one up in arms over how this happened.

YoloinOhio Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 @mikerodak: Aaron Williams said Rex Ryan told players that Bills did "everything they could" to keep Jackson but "timing" wasn't right.

Whaley WANTED to let Fred go in March but was overruled by Pegula and the fans. This was the best way to let Fred go. They let him go after he played in the game, showing he was healthy, and are give him time to hook up with another team.

I'm talking more about the first part (about being willing to take a pay cut).
YoloinOhio Posted August 31, 2015 Posted August 31, 2015 @TyDunne: Aaron Williams says it feels like his brother left the team. Calls it a "cutthroat" business.
