I'm not sure why everyone is trying to think how to defend TT. TT showed me last night if the defense places 8 in the box, he'll throw well to the outside to SWAT or Woods. If they place a spy, he can beat a lot of people in a foot race.

I was happy for EJ last night. Cassel in my opinion was the loser as no one is going to be afraid of 6 yard passes. I say we keep all 3 and Cassel is definitely #3.

I think using a spy on him is the best thing that could happen to the Bills. First, it usually doesn't work with very good running QBs. Wilson and Kaep still run at will and obviously teams have tried using spies against him. In the open field, Taylor is so elusive and fast and shifty that even if there is a spy waiting for him, chances are one on one that Taylor will beat that guy two out of three times.

But the biggest reason is Sammy Watkins, Percy Harvin, Robert Woods, Charles Clay and Shady McCoy. The opposing team is already in a huge conundrum over who to double because you can't double them all. We have a very shrewd OC that disguises plays well and uses a lot of motion. Using a spy makes it way, way easier for now three of those guys getting single coverage instead of two, and I very much like our chances way more if that is the case.

Taylor is thought of as a smart guy and so far he has been able to scan the field, make good decisions and deliver the ball. If you have single coverage on three of our best skill players I think TT will be able to exploit that more than a spy will stop him from running out of the pocket and actually tackle him.

I think this is the best answer so far... Even with a spy or maintaining lanes, it actually requires the player to do the right thing, and while these are professional athletes, instinct and misreads tend to draw them out of the position that they have game planned for, which leads to failed execution- fortunately for us, their DC isn't someone like Rex who creates pre-snap confusion....

Who is their DC?

Heard this question last night,, if our starting QB is" tyrod",,does that make Matt " kingpin" and E.J." ball joint" ,if so that means Sims is "idler arm"?

I know,, hang out with mechanics and watch a football game .lol while drinking ..

the Colts can't rush the passer with their front 4 (or at least that was the case last year and into the preseason) so I do think they will blitz - they are going to probably leave Vontae Davis 1:1 with Watkins and hope he can win the majority of the battles.

Interested to see if that holds true with our oline. If it doesn't, we may be in big trouble again this year. I'm hopeful the line is greatly improved.

Truth. When a QB is as fast and athletic as TT and tour spy is LB, it can be hard to keep up and take the right angle that needs to be made in a split second. Better strategy IMO is to keep pressure coming from different angles so he can't predict where its coming from. In this case you HOPE he runs right into a blitz at some point, takes a big shot, and is more run shy as the game moves forward.

It's a risk reward strategy, and you can get burned, but over the course of a game more effective than a predictable spy. Chess vs checkers

Yep. Plus most teams don't have five playmakers. No team has five guys like we do IMO. Usually you can single cover a couple of the lesser guys on a team and get away with it. All of our guys can beat one on one coverage a decent percentage of the time. You single Watkins or Percy or even Clay or Goodwin if he's still here and they can burn you bad. That's the beauty of the roster that Whaley built.

I just don't know how they don't start Taylor.

This would be a big blow to Indy's DL. Hurt ankle last night.

@JasonLaCanfora: Would be surprised if Art Jones doesn't miss a decent chunk of time. Colts should know more by midweek after foot specialists take a look

They don't. They have to game plan for EJ. :pirate:

First off, Manuel is starting against the Colts.

On topic... Every single team is prepared to deal with a runner at QB. The Colts will have a plan, that may or may not work based on their defensive talent and play calling. If I were the Colts I'd make Taylor beat me with his legs. Try to flush him out of the pocket and make him run for his life. That way, McCoy, Watkins, and Clay won't get their hands on the ball, and Taylor will eventually go down with an injury. The comparisons with Russel Wilson just go to show how little Wilson is respected by NFL fans. He's been through three injury-free seasons...two Super Bowls and a ring. The guy is excellent, and nobody compares to how he's accomplished those things. He may be insane, but right now he's the third best QB in the league behind Rodgers and Luck. If Taylor was half the thrower and decision maker (passing and running) as Wilson then he'd clearly be the starter and a very good NFL quarterback. But right now, his coach doesn't believe in him enough to even declare him a starter over Manuel and Cassel. I can't tell you how Mickey Mouse this stunt is, and the whole captain thing for the Pit game....super bush league by the Bills coaching staff.

I think it's easy for them to game plan. The face a better version of TT every day in practice.. Luck is slower and puts his shoulder down more and TT slides. Indies D Is nothing to be afraid of imho

Posted

What you try to do is bait a running qb into actually running.......and then converge on him......

The problem with all of this is TT has shown he is more then comfortable from the pocket.....he has the arm to get the ball intermediate to deep

I love the Bills in this matchup. Couldn't be a better time to play the Colts. Too much mental strain from all the weaponary on offense for their D to handle on opening day, in front of a sellout crowd. Their best hope is to keep it close early, because it could be a blowout otherwise. The Bills pass rush with a comfortable lead will be a thing of beauty. And, with little or no track record of the Bills offense to plan for. They are in trouble.

I'd tell my defenders to hit him. Often. And hard.

Probably see some extra zone looks so defenders don't have their back to him in case of running --- but mix it up a lot and test how well he identifies rushers and coverage shells.

If I'm Indy I also avoid grinding out the game and take some offensive risks to put pressure on him to consistently make plays. Obviously always the goal but against cassell I'm more apt to be ok playing it safe.

I feel like this would play right into our hands because of our defense......

Ryan is gonna have Luck under duress all day.....if they ask him to do too much downfield our defense is gonna create turnovers

It may. Or maybe not. We have a good team. If I'm the colts it's a way to put pressure on Taylor though. If he feels like he needs 7 often he may likewise press.

This post is not to suggest that Taylor is the starter for week 1 because we simply won't know for sure who it is until Rex actually announces it.

But, regardless of who does actually end up starting, Indy is going to have to try to be prepared for the possibility that it might be Tyrod Taylor.

And my question is - How does Indy game plan for Taylor? What would you do if you had to try to stop him?

Have Andrew Luck air the ball out against our struggling secondary as much as possible and score more points than us?

if I'm the Bills here's what I do: use Clay, McCoy, Harvin to attack the middle of the field. get their LB's to cover them. even if they are covered then T-Mobile runs it up the middle for a 10 yard gain once the LB's drop back in coverage. if they try and spy him then we have the receivers open over the middle. if they try and drop down the safety to help then we have Watkins or Woods deep. it's almost too easy. Indy can't stop it.

but unfortunately we can't stop Indy either. Andrew Luck will have either T.Y. Hilton or Andre Johnson in man coverage vs Darby. they will probably throw that way 30 times at least. it's a glaring hole on defense and a good QB will be able to take advantage

I see our starting 3 cb's as gilmore robey leodis. Darby is 4th man at best assuming leodis can play (fingers crossed)

Either way its gonna be a high scoring game I think. Luck is a machine and our cover guys are mediocre. Thats why I want TT running the offense, we need to keep Luck sleeping on the bench.
