Just installed windows 10 free upgrade.

Apparently there is a common problem with Windows 10 not being able to connect to the internet after the upgrade. I had to uninstall/reinstall my network/wifi card drivers to get it to work. Got a bit worried since It took me awhile to find the CD. There seems to be other connection problems that aren't as easy to fix...

FYI, my computer now feels like a giant tablet.

be warned.

Update:

I can't get dual monitors to work. fiddling with graphics drivers again.

I had no problem. And that's with a custom-built frankenmachine. Generally, reports are that the Windows 10 upgrade has been reliable. But there's always outliers...you apparently have the misfortune of being one of them.

You're right about it feeling like a giant tablet, though. It's not unusable...it's just the weird little things, like when it tells you to "swipe left," and I think "I can't, I'm on a desktop PC. How did you idiots not make the text context sensitive for PCs and touch-screen tablets?"

Posted (edited)

I was running dual graphics cards in my franken-machine. Windows 10 didn't like that they weren't identical so it killed one. Now I have to buy a converter to be able to use my old VGA monitor with the newer DVI/HDMI card.

....upgrades never seem to include old technology.

update: What the hell is Cortana?

There have been a number of driver issues, as should be expected. I put it on a rather underpowered Windows 7 laptop, just to screw around. I'm not crazy about some of the choices they made (the settings in Edge are absurd). But I think it will be fine. I would still hold off for a few months, unless your current OS is screwed up. Actually, for most people, upgrading is usually a mistake, IMO. If your computer runs well, why screw with it? You know the OS, the software runs---why mess around? Windows 7 is supported until 2020 and Windows 8 a couple years more. Make your next computer Windows 10.

Of course, if you have a spare PC, sure, take a shot.

That's why I upgraded: Windows 7 was unstable as hell on my machine, and nothing I could do would fix it (some sort of weird Chrome/graphics card/memory instability). Windows 10 was unstable at first...but at least it took me only two hours to get the settings dialed in (as opposed to the two years I spent fiddling with Windows 7). I refused to go to Windows 8 for a desktop - I like it fine on my Surface, but I couldn't imagine using it without a touch screen.

Interesting. I have dual graphics cards, but no problems. Of course, one's just for number-crunching, and not for the displays, which might make a difference.

No issues here but I am running all custom, recent hardware with a 4k monitor. I did have to update my driver for my ethernet adapter from the manufacturer and NOT the windows version.

BTW you can strip down that "tablet" windows interface. I have fully customized the start menu and taskbar. Mine feels like the 2015 version of windows 95. There is no tablet feel to it at all.

Windows 7 had become quite laggy on startup on my laptop that I got in 2010. I've kept it up to date and it's still nice enough to do everything I ask of it, so I figured why not.

The 10 version wasn't stable for the first few days, but after an update it came to rights. I was fiddling around in settings and problem fixer and it detected an issue with my router / wifi receiver setting that was alternating the signal coming into the laptop that would always cut out live video after a couple of minutes. I watch Bills games on here :pirate: and in addition to the on-field production the last 5 years, it had been really aggravating to see them line up at the LOS and then cut out. Should be better on both fronts this season!

I also switched from Firefox to Google Chrome for a browser. I was reticent to switch at first because I've used FF for a long time, but Chrome is faster to start and has just as many or more extensions / add-ons.

I kind of like the start menu tablet-like UI. Maybe it's just me....

Falling adoption rates have seen the company’s initial smugness evolve into incredulity and increasingly dirty tactics and now Microsoft appears to have forgotten about respecting choice entirely because life for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users is about to get a lot worse…

This is not a Mother Jones type of article, this is a Forbes examination of Microsoft's decision to treat its customers like idiots.

Microsoft Admits Windows 10 Automatic Spying Cannot Be Stopped

http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/11/02/microsoft-confirms-unstoppable-windows-10-tracking/

By default Windows 10 Home is allowed to control your bandwidth usage, install any software it wants whenever it wants (without providing detailed information on what these updates do), display ads in the Start Menu (currently it has been limited to app advertisements), send your hardware details and any changes you make to Microsoft and even log your browser history and keystrokes which the Windows End User Licence Agreement (EULA) states you allow Microsoft to use for analysis.

Keystrokes such as used to log into bank accounts and other secure websites.

update: What the hell is Cortana?

It goes back to the game Marathon. It was quite a hit. Cortana was the Hal of the game that would reveal certain information after levels were achieved. The game's developers promised a new version that would be ultra slick, and they went under development on it for a couple of years. About halfway through that they announced that their company had been acquired and the new version of the game would not be released for some time. The original game - Marathon was only available on the Macintosh platform. It was Microsoft who bought the startup gaming company. They used that game as their flagship product when they launched X-Box... yep, Halo is nothing more than the old Mac game Marathon in new skin. Now MS has a real Cortana, and it's looking over your shoulder at what you type and at what you see and do. It knows all, sees all. But you can trust it. Technology never fails.

Under Windows 10, Microsoft has access to ALL OF THE DATA on your PC. They say that this is so Cortana can help you with all of your life events, etc.

Cortana can be disabled but it is integrated so other things will fail which you may not expect but for me mostly things I do not want to use or having anyways link Bing Bunk. Once you do you need to log into Microsoft site and tell it to clear all your data like your Contacts which really does not do THAT much since it has already been copied to Microsoft's servers for analysis.

It's not an issue for me since I have Cortana disabled and will keep it that way.

Hmm, not sure if you're misremembering. Marathon, a completely awesome game (I still have the original 1.4MB floppies), had two computer AIs in it. One was named Leela, the other Durandal. I'm not sure if Cortana came along with Halo, but it wasn't part of Marathon.

Microsoft bought Bungie well after the Marathon trilogy was produced, and right before they created Halo. People were bummed because Bungie had been such a Mac-centric organization, and then after being bought by Microsoft while creating Halo, they announced it would be released only for Xbox and PC, I believe.

I believe you're right. I stand corrected. I finally played Halo once they compiled it for the Mac platform. That's probably the first instance of "Cortana", but it's clearly the derivative AI "Hal" that Leela and Durandal were in Marathon. It was a way cool game, but I was frankly astonished at how copied and pasted from Marathon that the story line and the levels were in the Halo premier. The re-skinned graphics were very nice, but the game itself wasn't really any different than it was originally on the Mac. It was a good purchase by Microsoft. I still hate them to this day for doing that though.

A few months into the update and it still feels like a tablet, but I'm used to it now. The advertising messages are annoying, but I'm learning to ignore it.

I'm starting to use the option of opening programs under a windows 7 platform (which is nice), that fixed some compatibility issues with older programs. As far as Cortana recording my every keystroke, I wonder if they have databases on the types of porn people download...

Totally with you on that. Once Microsoft took over Bungie, they were almost dead to me. I think most people believe Marathon was the "spiritual predecessor" of Halo, but in many ways Halo was vastly inferior.
