It's gotta be Roman who makes the QB call, right?

If Rex is truly a player's coach then he will no doubt ask Sammy Watkins "off the record" who he thinks is the best QB and the one he wants as the starter. Sammy is a big star and I think that what he thinks will carry a lot of weight. The Bills want him happy and for him to have a huge breakout season. Sammy may not even know who he'd like best right now, but I'm sure that Rex will ask him.

IMO, they should poll the entire team and front office via a secret ballot and count them up after the final preseason game. In that way, we can have fairness and a democratic process. Only trouble is, we have three QB's vying for the starting job and there may not be a clear majority so they'll have to establish that it's a winner take all secret ballot and require them to abide by the vote.

Ideally Roman, but if he chooses Cassel, I hope Rex overrules him and starts TT or EJ. Starting Cassel is akin to playing Orton last year. It maybe gets a few more wins, but at the expense of identifying whether there is a future QB on the roster. And Cassel is also only on a 1-year deal and will want a ton to re-sign, meaning he'll likely be gone next year anyway.

My memory isn't that good , but wasn't that one reason they switched to Orton ?

Because the WRs were b!@#$ing about Manuel?

I never saw a credible report list that as a reason. Only posters on message boards.

Manuel was not playing well, so they made the switch. Orton managed the offense better and the players noted more conviction from Orton in the huddle.

Rex has two guys he wants to keep happy, McCoy and Watkins. IMO, the guy who throws the best deep ball is the guy to go with because it opens up big holes for McCoy and Sammy will have 14 TDs. Sammy would be a genius with that kind of selfish thinking!

Losman threw an awesome deep ball also, how did he and the team turn out?

I think Roman should make the call after talking to his main receivers . It would be bad to have receivers sulking and quitting on routes if they are unhappy with the QB.

What about asking the O-line too, then? Important for the C to be comfortable, changing the play at the line properly...etc

Ask the defense, too. They need to trust that the QB will extend drives, so that the defense doesn't get tired out by the end of the game.

Some good thoughts here...my thinking is specifically related to the experience Roman brings to the table. This is the best OC Rex has ever had, with the best pedigree, who could truthfully be a HC in a year. I don't for a moment think Rex doesn't have the authority to veto, but I also think Rex absolutely trusts Roman to run the offense.

For there to be a real conflict you'd have to have a complete disconnect between Rex and Roman on who could most effectively run the team, and I don't perceive that happening. I also think Roman is smart enough to persuasively negotiate with Rex as to why he wants a particular guy.

That's not really an argument because one could counter with...

Cassel = Fitzpatrick

Taylor = "insert name of failed running QB"

All three QBs have concerns and questions to overcome no matter who is named the starter.

Like others, I imagine the OC. Especially given Rex's track record with developing (and picking) QBs.

After seeing all of them now in preseason, I'm not worried. They all have plusses and negatives, but are good enough to get us to the playoffs with our defense and playmakers. Convinced the OC, given his own track record, can build an offense around any of these guys. Despite popular opinion, I think that guy is going to be Manuel with Cassel as backup. Taylor is intriguing, but I don't see the OC taking a chance on him with the style of play that's proven time and time again to cause injuries. As we've heard, though, Rex is a fan, so we'll see who shakes out.

Rex is the HC, so he'll be taking responsibility for the decision. Roman's opinion should carry heavy weight, but the decision should ultimately be Rex's.

Haha...if the WRs are sulking and quitting on routes like little b!@#$3es, then they can sit on the bench.

That's what they did last year -and rightfully so. It was the QB who found his azz on the bench.

To the OP's question, yes, REX is ultimately responsible, but he's freely admitted he's far more a D-Coach than Offense and that's why he collared G-Ro. As long as the Offensive strategy aligns with keeping the Defense fresh, it'll be Romans' pick.

IMO.

I think that it will be a group decision, and they're probably going to be on the same general page.

However, if it comes down to Roman wanting one guy vs. Rex wanting the other, I would hope that Rex lets Roman make the call.

This.

In my humble opinion, the theory how how to best prepare the coordination of the half of the field you don't know about goes something like this:

-Decide your philosophy of how you want to win games. In our case, it's to emphasize ball control, the running game, and beating down your opposing D so they're gassed when it counts. The defense generates turnovers, gives favorable field position, and cuts down on the points to O needs to win.

-You hire a coordinator who can bring your vision to life. Roman has a track record of being innovative in the run game. He has a track record of success with both a drop back passer who can dink and dunk and let skill players do their job (Smith/Cassel) and an athletic runner who can make plays with his legs, forcing an opponent to send an extra player to spy the QB. (Kaep/Taylor).

-The two discuss what plays best fit their scheme and philosophy.

I really hope that Rex really listens to GRo. It is his call at the end of day, but Rex has made numerous mistakes at QB and I really hope he defers if they disagree.

But I really hope that they're talking. If Roman says "I prefer this guy, but I can make the other guy work" I'm ok with Rex picking.

I guess I will go with Rex. When Roman becomes a HC, he can decide who his QB will be.

That said, Rex should factor into his decision a heavy amount of input from Lee and Roman.

Lee and Roman are both read option guys, right? If Rex likes Taylor, I can't see them objecting much. Designing a Taylor-driven offense is right up their alley. It makes too much sense to me.

Maybe their supposed apprehension actually involves Manuel. He's been successful with the deep ball and he ran the ball successfully in the last game. Hmmmmm....

I can't wait for Saturday.
