CardinalScotts Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I think they hold on to Manuel because all his money is guaranteed anyway, TT as a running QB has a higher than normal chance of getting hurt, and maybe, just maybe, a team will get hit with injuries and offer something in trade for him. he not making anythng, simms to pratice squad EJ out
BuffaloBillsMagic1 Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 At this point I would have a concern about letting EJ go. I could see the Pats picking him up to pick his brain for week 2. It would be just another classless move by a classless organization. A winning organization however does stuff like this.....
Deranged Rhino Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 (edited) he not making anythng, simms to pratice squad EJ out I really do not understand the desire to cut EJ, even if he's #3. His money is guaranteed so there's no cap benefit now or in future and at worst he's great depth at a shaky position. He's not a distraction in the locker, and the media's focus on him makes the job a bit easier for TT and Cassel (speculating there). There's zero logic to cut the guy unless they need to make room to keep an extra RB/WR/TE ... even then I doubt QB is the first position that gets trimmed to make that kind of room. Can someone explain why, even if he finishes 3rd in this race, the team would cut EJ? Other than roster space, that argument I get. Edited August 19, 2015 by GreggyT

There is no explanation other than some visceral irrational hatred for EJ. If one takes the time to logically think about the situation, it makes sense to keep him for the 2015 season for a number of good reasons.

There's no cap savings by cutting him ( http://overthecap.com/salary-cap/buffalo-bills) and then you'd have to rely on Simms or a street FA if disaster struck. Why would Whaley and Rex want to do that?? The only argument I can see is if he has trade value. But according to his detractors, he isn't worth a bag of hammers, so who would bite on that...

There is definitely a good argument that cutting him or any QB would allow the team to keep Goodwin or Hogan or Thigpen or Boobie or Bryce or a fourth TE, etc, who otherwise would be cut. I'm not sure it's a good enough reason but it's a very good reason. A very good player is going to be cut that could help this team if they keep 2 vs 3 QB.

At that point wouldn't the QB position be the last place you'd look to make room? The teams specialists, like Gay, would be the first to go as he's the definition of a luxury item. I don't imagine the front office would be comfortable going into the season with only Cassel and Taylor with Simms stashed on the PS. Simms isn't better than EJ, and EJ will be picked up if he's released because he's at the very least a quality backup, something I'm sure Whaley and company realize. Cassel has had some injuries and Taylor is a complete unknown durability-wise. I just can't see them not keeping all three at this point -- barring a trade scenario. They need to protect themselves depth wise at the most important position in the game.

Overall yes it is probably better to keep the three QBs, which is why I said it's probably not a good enough reason to cut EJ. About half of the NFL teams keep two QBs active and not three these days. Mostly I imagine because they think if you are down to your third your season is pretty well shot but I don't know that for sure and the PS rules are more lax. Most #3s suck or are long term projects nowhere near ready. If I were Whaley or Rex I would keep the three. But there is definitely a good argument that Thigpen is worth it or Goodwin/Hogan or Mulligan/Gray or Bryce/Boobie.

One of the very few teams where there likely wouldn't be much, if any, drop off from 1 through 3.
JTO Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 Highly unlikely that EJ sticks. In a cash savings move, he will eventually be released. TT Cassel Simms #1- cassel #2- tyrod #3- EJ P.S. - simms
26CornerBlitz Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 (edited) Highly unlikely that EJ sticks. In a cash savings move, he will eventually be released. TT Cassel Simms Cash savings move? Is Pegula cash strapped? Cutting EJ costs money against the cap. Beyond that, Matt Simms has no place on any NFL team's active roster unless they are decimated by injury at QB. But according to his detractors, he isn't worth a bag of hammers, so who would bite on that... Well since a number of them holes in head hammers would be useful for driving nails into the holes ... why do I have a feeling somebody on TBD is searching for how to prepare Koala for dinner Actually I was referring to recipes for kitchens such as fresh prepared food rather than cans or pouches but would not be surprised some are looking for ways to prepare Koala for dinner.
DerekJ Posted August 19, 2015 Posted August 19, 2015 I wholeheartedly agree with this. Many want to close the book on EJ but he's not any different than most QBs of the not so distant past (and present). It was once expected that the first round QB you picked would sit and learn behind an established vet for 3-4 years before getting his shot. We haven't had that and said situation is a rarity in today's league. I have this sinking feeling that if we cut him loose that he'll finally catch fire elsewhere in a year or two. I don't think this is a smokescreen. What would be wrong with having an exciting starter with playmaking ability (Taylor), a veteran backup (Cassel), and a developmental QB (Manuel)? I understand EJ's pedigree as a 1st round pick, but the truth is that he is better right now than he was at this point in 2013 or 2014. He IS coming along, albeit slowly. In the meantime, Whaley has done his job and improved the position. I believe Taylor should start, but I don't understand the rush to judgment around this kid when it isn't necessary. Why do we have to "close the book" on EJ? He is 25, the money is controlled, he made the best throw of the night last week, he keeps his mouth shut, both the QBs in front of him are in danger of getting hurt, and I'm not ready to give up on him. I know that Rex isn't emotionally invested in him and Whaley might like to connect the pick to Buddy, but I don't think that means they need to show him the door. Ultimately, the Bills are in an interesting situation, where they might have three of the top 45 QBs in the league right now, but none of the top 20 or 25.
BillsFan-4-Ever Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 I really believe if you give Roman a full year with EJ...with the talent around him now...He could develop into a Top 10-12 QB in this league...And that will be plenty good enough to win and compete with this roster... like R Wilson, Ryan (ATL) Eli Manning, Flacco, Stafford, Alex Smith? Hapless Bills Fan Posted August 20, 2015 Posted August 20, 2015 (edited) Highly unlikely that EJ sticks. In a cash savings move, he will eventually be released. TT Cassel Simms Since EJ's salary is guaranteed through next year, how does releasing EJ save cash? I suppose it's possible that when he's picked up by another team, the salary they pay him comes off what we owe. But since the argument for cutting him is (per those making it) he sucks worse than any other QB in the league, wouldn't that be minimal? Edited August 20, 2015 by Hopeful
