DC Tom Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 BBC says a ship full of explosives blew up next to an oil storage depot. I can think of a few ways that could be worse (nitrate fertilizer, a nuclear plant). But not many.
Deranged Rhino Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 For the morbidly curious out there, there are other videos of the explosion out there right now showing a lot of carnage. I won't post those (for obvious reasons, nor will I look myself but they're out there).
Deranged Rhino Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 Everyone in a 1km area of the explosion is expected to have perished. There are over 2.5 million people living in the district (more in the city proper). Chemical fires are still raging and now there is fear of toxins in the air from the plant. Some are saying they'll be lucky if the casualty count is under 7,000. (all of this is from the web / twitter so it could be wildly inaccurate. For the sake of those on the ground there I hope it is inaccurate).

Deranged Rhino Posted August 12, 2015 Author Posted August 12, 2015 I would be amazed if the casualty count were that low. The videos from closer to the explosion certainly agree with this sentiment.
GG Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 BBC says a ship full of explosives blew up next to an oil storage depot. Great central planning for you folks. How come defenders of socialism always ignore these little incidents due to failures of accountability?
Taro T Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 BBC says a ship full of explosives blew up next to an oil storage depot. I can think of a few ways that could be worse (nitrate fertilizer, a nuclear plant). But not many. Memories of watching the Phillips refinery burn in '89. Didn't see the explosion but felt it. Classroom windows faced towards the Ship Channel & Passadena. When really bad things happen at refineries & plastics plants they are truly horrific. Hopefully this was late enough that the crews that work near where this explosives shipment was being handled was minimal. Also hope this area was industrial enough that not many people lived nearby. Wow.
IDBillzFan Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I don't speak Chinese, and yet I feel like I understood everything that guy said.
DC Tom Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 The videos from closer to the explosion certainly agree with this sentiment. I've seen enough footage to believe that the casualties from flying glass alone are huge. Important point: if you're ever looking out the window, and you see an explosion that big, get away from the !@#$ing window.
Chef Jim Posted August 12, 2015 Posted August 12, 2015 I've seen enough footage to believe that the casualties from flying glass alone are huge. Important point: if you're ever looking out the window, and you see an explosion that big, get away from the !@#$ing window. My first thought. Great central planning for you folks. How come defenders of socialism always ignore these little incidents due to failures of accountability? Look what happens when there is little government regulations in 3.....2.....1.
3rdnlng Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 My first thought. Look what happens when there is little government regulations in 3.....2.....1. You mean the left was going to make this political? Where are they? It's not like them to let a crisis or tragedy go to waste.
Rob's House Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 Think of all the carbon being put into the atmosphere.
boyst Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 My dad used to do work in this area. Said its all confined and couldn't remember how close the hotels were that western folks stay in, but thinks they were only a few miles.
unbillievable Posted August 13, 2015 Posted August 13, 2015 My first thought when i saw the video was that it was Chinese new year.
