Well thankfully it's just a cheap 97 Ford Contour

they may total it for the airbags. knew someone with a mid 90s car whose airbags went off and they totaled it. damage to the car was negligable, but the cost of the airbags was enough to total it

A year ago my daughter hit deer with a 1995 Windstar. The deployment of the airbags was the difference between the insurance co. repairing it and totalling it. Not having the airbags would not have endangered them. It wasn't much of a collision. I'm sure the deer would disagree though.

$1000 is for the bags only, you also have to have all the sensors in the front end replaced. At least $5000 for the entire job. And you would get new bags, would you really want used airbags?

No the writeup posted was for the whole thing. It is about 1000 for driver side and 1000 for passenger, but they say about half the time the passenger side airbag will bust the windshield so add 400 for each time it breaks, or 200 per accident. Hence 1000 average to install the driver side and 1200 average cost for the passenger side.

Maybe that's how the windshield got busted. It certainly is limited to that side of the car.
