Not as long as the only people promoting him are progressives.

He's your new John Huntsman. Didn't work then. Won't work now. You're too stupid to realize this...which is, somehow, not surprising.

I like Kasich. I don't what there isn't to like, his positions are reasonable and he is thought of very highly in arguably the most important state. His approval ratings are sky high, great track record and is a budget hawk. Plus he doesn't pander to the right wing base to garner votes like most of the candidates. I don't know about you, but I like candidates that stick to their convictions despite pressure from the base of their party to change their positions,

I'm now leaning more towards Kasich, with Rubio as Vp

Kasich doesn't "have convictions"; almost no politician does. What he has is an election strategy. He wants to position himself as the most moderate candidate and as the backup plan to Jeb (if Jeb continues to decline in favorability) and inherit Jeb's donors and establishment backing. I think Kasich has a better chance of pulling this off than Hunstman, but it's still unlikely.

Besides, "convictions" aren't important. If Kasich had the conviction to molest children and didn't back off that stance despite fierce criticism, apparently you would love him.

Kasich is a big-government liberal who talks like it. That's why the Left loves him.

Uh.. gee. Kasich is the only Republican that I'd consider voting for, but, if you say so. #feelthebern

None of the liberals saying they'd vote for Kasich would actually vote for him over the Democrat nominee.

Also, if the middle is really that desireable, why are you guys pushing a hard left socialist?

He's a big government liberal relative to someone who is inline with Attila the hun.

The only shot Kasich has if Jeb continues to lose support.

And believe it or not and I know this going to be virtually inconceivable for you, there are people who aren't overly ideological that embrace positions from both sides of the aisle.

Shocking! I know.

Lol, well, when some of these candidates drop out it will shake things out a bit. Trump will gain when and if Carson leaves and Rubio, Walker, Christie, Bush and Kasich seem to be chasing the same voters, but who knows. I wonder what Trumps high water mark can be. Kasich would do well in general election and would beat Hillary or Sanders, IMO

Right now, which things could change for Hillary for the worse, but if things remained static and no new bomb shell revelations came out and the campaign were to actually begin on a one on one basis. In my view, the candidates most likely to defeat Hillary would be Kasich and Rubio with then Walker, Jeb and Cruz would be the next tier of candidates that would have a legitimate shot at beating her.

I propose a bet.

IF Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination, he will also win the presidency. You would take the other side and bet that he would lose. Let's make the stakes $50 by PayPal. Agreed?

Obviously the bet only activates if Trump wins the nomination.

And this offer goes out to every poster on this board who has been posting for a long time on TBD. (Say, a couple thousand posts at least.)

I want you guys to agree to the bet now because by next summer, it might become obvious that he's the favorite.

I'm obviously crazy so take the bet.

Your comments aside, the only people I hear in Kasich's corner are lefties. Just like they were for Huntsman. Not because they liked him, but because it allows leftists to sound like they're not Dead Dog Democrats while supporting someone everyone knows can't win.

Frankly, after the last seven years and the prospect of a Hillary Clinton presidency, I've stopped hoping the GOP wins and started hoping the left loses. Hillary is a smarter version of Obama, which is to say she won't need someone like Valerie Jarrett telling her what to do because she already knows what she wants to do...and none of it seems to have anything to do with helping and protecting Americans.

Sure, it's not the first bet I've made. Lost the last one to Big Cat. But I'll take that bet.

Raise the tax cap from $118,500 to $2,000,000 would go a long way too.

The answer to every problem is always to tax the rich more isn't it and in this case this could also tax the employer more, a lot more since employers pay half of SS.

Good man. Willing to show courage in your "convictions."

LABillz - The libs would destroy Trump with "on your knees" ads, right? Take the bet!

GG - Trump is the greatest gift to the Dems, right? Take the bet!

He has a 60% approval rating in Ohio and the last poll that came out of Ohio in a matchup vs. Hillary, he crushes her by 7 points.

And in the state of New Hampshire, the last poll has him in second in the GOP primaries. Meaning he has some support among Repubs.

He's never going to fire up the further end of the right spectrum, because his positions are too moderate which was Romney's problem. But, Kasich can win over much more of the working class repubs that aren't overly ideological, moderates and even some more democrats, simply because you won't be able to paint him as some outsourcing plutocrat that doesn't care for the poor. Plus his position on immigration will attract more Latino's than Romney's.

Just because your political foes think Kasich is an alright guy shouldn't affect how you view him. Sure, many of these same liberals are that seem to think Kasich is acceptable will almost undoubtedly vote for Democrat. But the fact that some view him as ok, most likely means that many of those like-minded sort of Reagan Democrats that pulled the lever for Reagan will give an honest look at Kasich. He would be damn tough to beat in the General elections.

That's pretty much been my philosophy since the Carter administration. It's not that I'm pro-republican, I'm anti-socialist.

Safe bet because no way in hell does he win the nomination. He won't rise beyond the support of Trumpeteers.

I genuinely have no idea who I particularly like at this juncture. And in truth, it's not political foes who think he's an alright guy. It's the faaaar-left nutbags like Franz, who prefer to see an avowed socialist run the country, but suddenly have no problem with a Republican. It would be like me saying "I'm voting for Rick Santorum, but I can see where Hillary might be a good president." We both know that wouldn't square in an honest discussion.

Frankly, none of it looks good right now. It dawned on me last night that, as I look at the field of candidates on both sides, I've yet to identify one person who is running because they truly love this country. Maybe Rubio. But everything sounds the same at this point, and it's impossible to find any genuine sincerity.

Politics isn't about sincerity. It's about whoring yourself to the corporate masters of this country.

David Harsanyi from the Federalist who is a solid conservative by any reasonable standard, nails it.

Donald Trump is porn for nativists. Now, a person can derive much political self-gratification from wishful thinking, but remember porn isn’t real. So enjoy daydreaming about mass deportations and visualizing the repeal of birthright citizenship, but don’t let yourself get desensitized to reality.

In the real world, Trumpism is destroying any slim hope the GOP could have a rational immigration debate or cobble together a consensus on policy. Before his fans began genuinely considering a Trump presidency, you’ll recall that the most popular justification for supporting the vanity run was the idea that he’d provoke legitimate candidates to talk about illegal immigration. Because, as you all know, no one has ever tackled this issue before ever, or so goes the myth spun by the same people who earnestly tell you that Jeb Bush is a Trotskyite but Donald Trump is the second-coming of Ronald Reagan.

--Snip--

Trump’s immigration plan doesn’t feature deportation, officially. It also doesn’t matter. Trump’s fans—not all, but enough—aren’t turned on by softcore white papers authored by Jeff Sessions, they want the hard stuff (and not only should you trouble believing he Trump has any intention of implementing his white paper, you should have trouble believing he has ever read the thing,). His fans are energized by protectionist rhetoric and the fallacy of zero-sum economics. They’re fired up because he’s the first major candidate to call illegal immigrants rapists and murders. They’re thrilled because he’s going to build a wall and make Mexico pay for it. And they’re super excited because he supports the deportation of 13 million illegal immigrants.

----Snip---

What economic damage would this kind of project inflict on the United States? What kind of moral damage? Trump cultists do not need to weigh the costs of these piddling questions, because all the troubles in the world can be pinned on the illegal—with an assist from their nefarious partners in crime, the RINO (and from what I can tell, there remains only one non-RINO left in the entire country).

----Snip----

Many Americans have genuine concerns—I count myself among them—about thepreservation of law and order, about the cultural consequences of immigration, about assimilation, and about sovereignty. But today, there is a purity test that demands a voter sign up for the Trump plan or admit he’s an enemy of the state. I imagine when it’s all said and done, most Americans will choose the latter. But the fractures within the Republican Party have been pried apart. Any candidate unwilling to try and keep up with Trump is transformed into a limp-wristed Commie whose primary chances die on the vine. Those who praise Trump’s agenda to placate the base would be annihilated in a general election, forced to defend an absurd menu of statist intrusions and unrealistic policies.

Actually, “the base” is the wrong phrase here. The base is a principled group of philosophically driven party purists. Trumpism is nothing like the Tea Party movement, for instance. The latter, sometimes naïve, was driven by ideals grounded in traditional American thinking. Trumpism is collective expression of base impulse. And like porn, that sort of thing is equally absurd and destructive.
