John Miller: The straight and narrow

Recommended Posts

First article I've seen from Tyler Dunne

Youve certainly heard about this 6-foot-2, 303-pound rookie stunning Bills coaches with his intellect this past spring. Miller picked up offensive coordinator Greg Romans complex blocking scheme so quickly, so seamlessly that he lined up with the starters in organized team activities. Miller was even telling some veterans what to do on plays.

Well, if that doesn't make you root for the guy, I don't know what will. Nice article.

agreed.

Nice article.

Great story really. I am already proud of the Kid.

some body needs to seek out the boy's dad and shake his hand. seriously. as a Father myself i just love the story

and i sure will be rooting for this kid as Bill.

should i feel guilty for being enthusiastic for the O line to come around ?

future captain

Wouldn't that be a hoot !

Good article, I'm looking forward to reading more of Tyler's work. But way premature, in terms of setting Miller up to be the answer at guard, IMO.

Knowing your assignments is a great thing for a rookie. But he'll be out-weighed by 20-30 pounds against the top DT's in the AFCE and it will be interesting to see if he can overcome that disadvantage when the pads come on...

Wings, pizza and beer could close the gap! :)

Oh, you probably prefer muscle.... No question, he'll face some serious tests.

Pretty well written article.

Very interesting that he scored a 7 and then a 14 on the wonderlic and yet the coaches in college and pros say his football intellect is off the charts good.

Those are the types of scores that might have actual literacy issues. Not meant as a "he's dumb" type of knock but there could be something going on that would reconcile poor test taker and good football player

Yep. Good point. It seems to me someone should be able to come up with a Football Wonderlic test. The same kinds of questions but about football related topics and thinking and verbiage.

Mayock could not stop talking about this kid in the first minutes of the East-West shrine game. He was talking OL and he said that there was always someone that "pops" and this year was him.

Which may bridge the gap for some but if it's a problem with reading, a guy may struggle unless it's diagrams or discussion potentially. Do they make any accommodations for known learning disabilies? Not saying it's the case here but kind of curious about the topic

No big surprise there. The Wonderlic, judging by the samples I saw, tests vocabulary, reasoning ability, and basic math. I can easily see some of these kids who are recruited to college for their football skills having trouble on the Wonderlic, especially with all these "communication" and "sports management" and "basketweaving" majors, yet being able to excel at the subject they've really studied (football)

Great read, good information, and a hell of a story. I truly do hope Miller becomes a Perennial Pro-Bowl Guard for the BILLS, for them and for him. Also, if true (which obviously remains to be seen - a looooong way from showing anything of substance or value), Whaley continues to hit homeruns on the Draft. Before we digress into the QB issue (AGAIN!), keep in mind Nix was the GM at the time EJ was Drafted and while Whaley was the man in the wings, Nix was at the helm. You can't have it both ways: you either give the GM the credit / blame for picks, or you don't.

I think that's what the interviews are for. Do your homework and find some gems. I hope this is a steal and a job well done by the staff!

Right on.

The other side of the equation is having coaches that can coach a kid up.

You can draft any one , but can you transition them to the NFL ?

Sounds like, mentally at least, Miller is ahead of the curve. And he does have excellent core strength as noted. he is going to beat his man once he gets a hold of him.

I wonder if Whaley would've kept Fitz? Again, it doesn't really matter who the GM is...there are just not a lot of great QBs to go around.
