[closed]QB Rivers/S Weddle - Package Deal

Recommended Posts

Both Rivers and Weddle (two multi-Pro Bowl veteran players) have fallen out of favor with the SD Chargers. Both are now there for the taking.

The only question is.....at what price??

The Bills have a real need at QB and also to a lesser extent at S (River would quarterback the offense; Weddle would quarterback the defense).

The Bills continue to sign cheap vet players in order to improve the team w/out eating up cap space. They are only improving their overall depth at this point. Since the draft they have added FB Connor, DE Buchanan, TE Mulligan, QB Simms, DT Fluellen, and plan to add OT Hunter. All at the vet minimum.

Those moves are proof that they are doing everything they can to make this team better. They are, in short, in WIN NOW MODE.

They have made it known that they aren't planning to sign a guy like OG E. Mathis at this point because they would like to try to keep what little assets they have available to potentially pick up a vet QB, should one become available. In other words, they would be willing to create more cap room for a vet QB, but not necessarily for a high dollar player at another position.

As the off-season progresses it will be interesting to see how the Chargers view both Rivers and Weddle, two high dollar, older players. It will also be interesting to see if Rex comes to the conclusion sooner than later than his three QBs may not be good enough for what he would like to accomplish.

Personally, I expect Weddle to be waived eventually because he doesn't appear to be in SD's long range plans. He's still a very good S, one of the best in the league.

Eventually, the asking price for Rivers may come down significantly. If it ever gets to the point that SD if willing to take less than a R1 pick plus certain players I think we just may see Rex/Whaley take a bite.

Your thoughts???
