Rob's House Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 What's the difference between "unwarranted" and "warranted" condescension? Not trying to be antagonistic. Just curious. If someone's talking with great arrogance or condescension of their own, particularly about something they don't know much about, I'd say it might warrant a condescending response from someone in the know. When someone makes a reasonable statement that you happen to disagree with, I don't think it's warranted.
mikemac2001 Posted August 22, 2015 Posted August 22, 2015 Always liked him but he seemed to small to play oline
BADOLBILZ Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 No, in this new era, it's mostly because they haven't found a franchise QB. It's a passing league and the consistently good teams have good QB's. I completely agree that QB has been by far the biggest issue. But they are not two separate issues. I would trade the entire starting defense....a top 5 D for sure......for a Joe Flacco or Russell Wilson.....legit 10-15 year franchise building blocks.....and guys they passed on in their respective drafts. They've taken a couple cracks on first round rookies in the past 15 years but they've mostly been just trying to get lucky. I make this point every year but if they had used their first round pick on the QB that ended up being selected AFTER their pick in each of the past 15 years then they would be much better off. You'll miss on more of those picks.......but players at most other positions have shorter careers. Example......Drew Brees is one of those guys and he was drafted in 2001......and the longest tenured Bills #1 pick is Leodis McKelvin from 2008. When it comes to team building it makes sense that QB always be the top priority.
Nanker Posted August 23, 2015 Posted August 23, 2015 You may not agree, and others may not agree, and I understand that point of view, but I always thought one of this site's great entertainment value is the smack downs and snarkiness and you have to have some tough skin to post here. Again it's not everyone's cup of tea but a rite of passage is being insulted by DC, who is smarter than you. Screw the 100 post minimum requirement to begin a new thread some have advocated. Hey Scott - can we make it no newbie can post until DC Tom calls them an idiot... at least once. Now, back to the OP: I'm still glad they didn't overpay for Levitre and for Byrd. But, the past is the past and none of us can change any of that. There's a brand new FO in town and it seems like they're doing more things right than they are doing wrong. It's refreshing, and I for one am enjoying the bejezus out of this offseason and can't wait for the season to begin. Yes, hope springs eternal for a Bills fan in August. I got a feelin' good things are about to happen. Good things, man. Go Bills!
26CornerBlitz Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 @Dan_Hope #Titans benched LG Andy Levitre tonight. Bad sign for a player set to make $8.6 million this year.
Doc Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 @Dan_Hope #Titans benched LG Andy Levitre tonight. Bad sign for a player set to make $8.6 million this year. He'll actually make $6.5M in base salary, the rest is amortized bonus. I doubt they'll keep him around and pay him even that just to make the original deal look less worse than it was. Looks like it will end up being a 2-year $19.5M deal.

Saxum Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 IIRC Chas Rhinegold was let go that same year (or he walked away to follow Joe D'Alesandro to SD)...either way, Rhinegold may have been the prize that walked as opposed to Andy. Rhinegold definitely followed D'Alesandro; he stated he was the coach who proved he was starter material and his system was best system for him. I think that D'Alesandro was the prize that walked. Agreed and said as much when he was replaced rather than be interviewed. When the less than average NFL fan can tell that the contingency plan is a bunch of malarkey can it really be called a contingency plan? I really don't care what the "less than average NFL fan" thinks and hope neither do NFL personel other than on what they want to spend it on.
Saxum Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 (edited) If I recall correctly, his wife is from Buffalo for what it is worth. She (Katie Riznyk) is from Orchard Park and is an ex-Jill and went to Buffalo State College which definitely makes her a Buffaloian even if not from Buffalo. Wish the Bills could have come to terms with Andy but despite ties to Buffalo he definitely was a highest bidder type of guy. Hey, what's Jairus Byrd up to these days? He hawks custom athletic soles for players with bad feet .... You make an incisive point regarding the old guard regime to the new regime starting with Nix to the Whaley era. I wasn't enamored with Buddy but I give him credit and acknowledge that he had an understanding on how to build a roster. He represented the line of demarcation from the anachoristic way of running a franchise to a more modern approach. He wasn't always right with his decisions (no one is) but he had a clue. As you noted Whaley is more conceptual and forward-thinking in his approach to building a roster. I also have issues on some of his personnel and drafting decisions but overall he has a more modern approach to the GM position compared to the befuddled old guard in the last stages of the Wilson/Littman era. Saying someone is smarter than I am is not a major accomplishment or necessarily a compliment. A lot of roster changes were result of wholesale replacing of coaches without appearing to learn from them, who were being paid even if head coach was canned, strengths and weaknesses of players. They kept the conditioning coaches which allowed them to some knowledge but they repeated mistakes corrected by previous staff. Throwing out the bath water with the baby made no sense and Rex seems to understand that. Too bad he could not find a compromise position for Jim Schwartz. Edited August 24, 2015 by Koolaid
The Dean Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Would swoop in on him if he gets cut.....our backup OL is not good Sure. As long as he isn't overpaid, he could help this team. I still would like them to take a run at Mathis. Who knows, maybe they have. But if he is going to play this year, it isn't likely to be for big money. This teams' OL depth scares the crap out of me.

I posted the same thoughts after the 1st preseason game. I'm sure Whaley will be busy during first cuts to find someone as think we have seven saft bets in Glenn, Incognito, Wood, Miller, Henderson, Urbik & Kujo but after that we got nothing. 3rdand12 Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Would swoop in on him if he gets cut.....our backup OL is not good Has his value fallen that far? i think you are being sentimental. Along with anyone else who wishes Levitre back. his wheels fell off since he left. He is a best a back up and no one is sure he can be healthy to do that. lets talk about the O line and define the starters and then describe who and what the second string can do as far as being cross trained? They keeping 8 ?
Lurker Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 (edited) This teams' OL depth scares the crap out of me. Same here. They need some more veteran backup (or even starter) help. Anybody ever hear what happened to Gosder Cherilus? Edited August 25, 2015 by Lurker

Wow, time warp. So, you're saying that the Bills went into last season in the best shape that the FO could have hoped for? Because spend it on the o-line they did. Remind me how that worked out.
Kelly the Dog Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Same here. They need some more veteran backup (or even starter) help. Anybody ever here what happened to Gosder Cherilus? He signed with someone a few days ago.
Augie Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Would swoop in on him if he gets cut.....our backup OL is not good I'd love him back.... without that first digit on his salary. Or thereabouts.... (Yeah, never happen, but a guy can dream!)
Peter Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Sounds like one of the names from Key and Peele's team. Well done.
thebandit27 Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 Again I say that I don't think anyone should be surprised at this development. Levitre was an above-average guard that got paid like an all-pro. He's been a huge disappointment in Tennessee, and I thought he'd get cut at the start of the league year. If indeed he is cut, I would entertain the idea of bringing him back, but it would need to be in a backup capacity and at a modest salary.

If it wasn't for his high salary, he'd most not be on the chopping block in Tennessee. If cut, maybe the Bills get him on the cheap---strictly as a backup. Edited August 25, 2015 by The Dean
