stuckincincy Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 I happened to check the active registered user list a few moments ago. There was a non-underlined "member" listed...archive.org. What is that?
stuckincincy Posted February 10, 2005 Author Posted February 10, 2005 And now it's gone. I'm not nuts, folks. I had read a PM just before. Maybe some connection there?
stuckincincy Posted February 10, 2005 Author Posted February 10, 2005 googlebot has replaced it...... 234137 No, I don't see that. Honest soul that I am, it was an odd thing that I've not seen before and call me paranoid, but I don't understand why it was displayed in the active users listing.

stuckincincy Posted February 10, 2005 Author Posted February 10, 2005 Googlebot still there , was on line two second word on left......... honest 234143 Yes, I see it. I don't look at the online users list a lot, but this non-underlined stuff is curious. I'm a (former) scientist, so anamolies prick my ears - and now the prick jokes will follow, I suppose. Are we under cyber-attack?

stuckincincy Posted February 10, 2005 Author Posted February 10, 2005 I have seen these for about a year now at various times , I do not have a answer 234153 I found out. "Googlebot: Google's Web Crawler Googlebot is Google's web-crawling robot. It collects documents from the web to build a searchable index for the Google search engine." Google is sniffing us and our message content with their web crawler. I'd like the Administrator to contact them to stop it. Type "Gooblebot" in your broswer for more info.

stuckincincy Posted February 10, 2005 Author Posted February 10, 2005 and then so does archive.org do this similarly? 234158 I've no idea - that was the first thing I noticed.
millbank Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 I've no idea - that was the first thing I noticed. 234160 If you go the the archive.org site it is obvious that is what they are doing as well. This is the site that has the " Way Back Machine" -thank you for resolving this.....
Tux of Borg Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 archive.org is a bot that takes a snapshot of your website. Everytime it see's something new on your website, it records it in their database. Kinda cool... i can see my old website design from years ago.

Would it be "kinda cool" if something took a snapshot of your family at home some evening, and put it into the public domain?

They have .htaccess files to password protect directories. Other than that, its fair game.

Anything for a buck types... 234169 My understanding is archive.org is free. Let's say you want to know what the news was on your birthday. Go to archive.org, look up cnn.com on the day you were born. I know this doesn't apply to anybody here, but that's just one example how you could use that site. 80 years from now, T-Bone can look up twobillsdrive and relive the memory of the redsocks winning the world series.
34-78-83 Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Archive.org is also a fantastic site for free, yet consented music downloads. If you are at all a fan of the Grateful Dead, archive.org is one of your best friends...
sfladave Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 Is archive.org privately run or government run? Here is the link for when I looked up www.stadiumwall.com Here is the link for when I looked up www.twobillsdrive.com.
Ramius Posted February 10, 2005 Posted February 10, 2005 no you arent on crack...i'm currently showing archive.org, googlebot, and ask jeeves as active members, even tho they arent underlined... frankly, i dont like it...
