Seems that CD players in new cars are going the way of the dinosaur. In favor of the indash CD player/changer, the USB port is taking its place. I am in the process of transferring my CD collection to flash drive. Here's the problem, if anybody can help me:

I rip the disk and transfer/encode the music to file... No problem, plays and sounds great! I can do this on the computer and have .wma files... Again, plays great, shows all information. I have stand alone CD encoders that will rip and transfer right to a flash drive to shorten the time to get my whole CD collection moved to flash. Think of it as a massive production line. CD Encoder 5 (CDE-5) and CD Encoder 10 (CDE-10)... Machines put out by DJTech, they work really well @ getting the collection transferred to flash drive fast. Between all three devices, computer and stand alone encoders, I am moving right along with my massive collection of CD's.

Here's the issue. I can tag the files in Windows or use mp3Tag... mp3Tag works very well too. The problem is when I get to the vehicle. Some will say: Unknown Artist & Unknown Album. That only happens with the .mp3 files when the file/track is up and playing. Directory system in the vehicle is flawless and shows everything. NOW, if I covert the file to .wma, the information will appear. I know it is my wording w/the info that appears, but I can't figure out where the information (artist/album) is being generated/populated from. I tried all logical ways to figure out from which part of the tag the information is coming from. It is always the .mp3 file that is the problem. BUT, some .mp3's come out just fine, so far some of the one's I tagged in Windows straight up (not mp3Tag program). Doesn't matter if the CD is old or new, 25 years old and no pre-encoded information or not (where I have to put in all the info manually). Or, newer ones that have tag information. I simply can't pinpoint the issue, I tried all logical steps to do so.

The vehicle uses MINI (BMW) Connected... Has the BMW iDrive system w/navi, etc... Etc.. Etc...

Why are some artist/album tags showing and some not? I open the file and it is all there. Like I said, I just ripped a CD that is almost 30 years old and has no tag information. I had to do it all manually, that album shows perfectly fine in the system once I manually entered tag information for each song file. BUT, convert to a .wma file from a .mp3 file (that won't show the information), and bam it is there. Again, some .mp3's are showing perfectly, some aren't.

Why?

If it has an iDrive can't you just download the CD's directly?

How would I do that?

There is no CD player in the vehicle. Would I have to have a CD player in the vehicle??? MINI is BMW, it came with BMW's iDrive, navi XL... And has "MINI Connected"

It is the new style MINI Cooper S (F56)...

I probably should have archived my CD collection years ago, but this pushed me to it.

That's what happens when downloading illegal music.

Hey, some smart ass had to say it.

Hey Tracy Lee... It is not illegal, I own the songs on CD and I am archiving them so as to put the plastic disks away for safe keeping.

The vehicle does NOT have a CD player, just a USB port. Heck, it doesn't have a spare or can of Fix-A-Flat either... Just run flats and a number to call.

Your cds arent that good. Maybe it's a sign.

Ripping from a computer is perfect... .wma files... Heck even some mp3s show the artist and album... Sound is perfect, it is just the tag and info I am looking to correct on SOME mp3's.

I legally own all songs.

Im just messing with you.

Weird situation. I dont have any idea on this one.

Yeah... I was hoping a techy can explain... I know how to tag, etc... Just some don't show. I know it is my nominclature that is showing on the tags. Why do all .wma's show and SOME .mp3's for ARTIST/ALBUM only. I go into the directory strucure, file tag and it is all there saved. I think there is a HDD in the vehicle, but that shouldn't matter? Some mp3's are showing correctly. Again, the nomiclature I use is mine. Like the .wma for Grateful Dead I used for Skeletons From the Closet is: Best of_Skeletons From the Closet. That underscore is mine and shows on the .wma file, but not the .mp3 version of a song (in vehicle of course, it shows in file on computer for all).

Oh well, I thought I was gonna breeze through my collection, this will slow me down if I can only use one computer... OR just deal w/: "Unknown Artist/album above a song playing.

Sooooo glad I don't have to worry about this stuff. My trusty trunk-mounted turntable works just fine.

I was talking about this with a friend recently. We both had bought new cars in the last two months and neither of us have even attempted to use the CD player. Thumbdrive works so much better

You are allowed to make a back up. But not multiple back ups ;)

Yes because that box eating up space in your trunk is so much more efficient than something the size of a finger nail that stores more music

Exactly! My trunk mounted CD-ROM on my 2006 Chyrsler just crapped out... No Navi until I fix it. Mechanical/moving parts like CD's suck when they get old.

Anyway, I moved (not multiple... ;);) ) things to another new bigger thumb drive and bam! My tag is showing! WTF. Now, I didn't put the other one in (1.65 GB) because of course I moved everything to the 16 GB drive... ;);) LoL... Think I should check it? There must be a HDD in the car, it knows exactly where I leave off when I yank the drive. ???

Thanx for all the help and of course the judgement that was passed. I wouldn't come here for anything less! :D
