NoSaint Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 We have to find a way to throw some serious dollars his way and find a way to make his agent, who also got stiffed, some money too. He may be limited by the UDFA pool but hopefully you can draw up a creative and alluring contract. Assuming of course that he's not Ahern's next door neighbor for the next 100 years. We had a good draft. Land him and with Ritchie, Miller and what we had last year our coaches would have what they need to vastly improve the O-line. Outside of secret payments I'm not sure what creativity your getting at
starrymessenger Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Outside of secret payments I'm not sure what creativity your getting at So there is no way to pay this guy? Is he really locked into a dirt cheap contract for x# of years? He can't reenter 2016, he's not eligible for the supplementary draft. So off with him to the Siberian gulag? Or can he sign a contract with escalators, player or team options or containing terms that in effect morph the contract into something more in line with his actual draft value depending on certain contingencies. Unless a contract like this contravenes league rules or the CBA that is exactly the type of deal I would expect him to get once he is exonerated.

He is locked into the deal he will get as an UDFA. It's in the CBA.
JM57 Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 @Gil_Brandt: If La'el Collins is cleared after meeting with police tomorrow, he will sign a FA contract. There will a lot of interest. OG is actually one of the positions most teams need. It was a major issue around the league last year. But would love to see him here if he's cleared! I was saying I wasn't sure how many teams had the need at guard (lots of teams) AND the scheme that will also benefit Collins the most. Who else has a power run scheme? San Fran, Seattle...I'm drawing a blank
thebandit27 Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I was saying I wasn't sure how many teams had the need at guard (lots of teams) AND the scheme that will also benefit Collins the most. Who else has a power run scheme? San Fran, Seattle...I'm drawing a blank Collins can virtually pick any team he wants. He's got both the finesse element and the power element to his game, and he can play tackle in the NFL. As to his best fit as a guard, I think a team with an inside zone scheme might be the best initially, as it'll limit the adjustment he'll face as he learns to play in limited space.
starrymessenger Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 No he can't sign a deal with escalators. He is locked into the deal he will get as an UDFA. It's in the CBA. Well that totally sucks for him if he's innocent. So he's locked in for three years both as to salary and bonus and can only get paid if his performance justifies a first or second level tender after the three years. Even then as a first round talent he's getting the shaft financially. I guess we should forget about Collins. Does the one year in Canada thing work for him? Might be his best move.

Teams get about 80k to split amongst with their entire pool however they see fit. If he straight sits out this year we've had some debate but not a firm answer on contract options.

Of course, the bonus for him is that he hits FA earlier than the guys that got drafted, and he still gets access to the rookie playing time incentive bonus program .

Lurker Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 It still could be the Bills. Scheme and talent wise, it's a very good fit. He is best suited at guard, where the Bills have a dearth of talent, and best suited for a power scheme, which Roman is installing. He could still be a day one starter in Buffalo. Not sure how many other teams would have a similar scheme and lack of talent at OG Moving inside to guard, his mobility is good enough to be effective in all but a few zone blocking schemes. There will be quite a few suitors with starting jobs to dangle in front of him, most of which will be in more attractive cities for a kid from the deep south...
dubs Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I think Jerry Sullivan would write a strongly worded, self-righteous article if the bills signed him.
Lurker Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 (edited) I see him signing with the Saints. Me too. It seems like Payton would have a recruiting edge there. Edited May 3, 2015 by Lurker
starrymessenger Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Still can't help wondering if some contractual shenanigans can't make this guy whole. The CBA seems to focus on his cash compensation while under the UDFA contract. But what if the team committed now to offer a first level tender after three years (yielding the second round comp he was allegedly seeking) and/or he was given a player option to enter into a new deal following expiry for an extra year (resulting in a 5 year deal usual for a first round pick) that made up the difference between a mid first round pick and an UDFA. While that might run afoul of the CBA policy it might also comply with the wording and would work some justice for the kid if innocent. Sorry, I just can't help it.
Kelly the Dog Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 The NFL should just step in and do what they do all the time and just say here is what's going to happen. This was a one time unusual circumstance and we are going to allow a team to slot him at something like the first pick of the second round. Make it clear this isn't to set a precedent it is a one time deal. They do whatever they want all the time and it would be the right thing to do if he is cleared of all wrong doing. It's their stupid rules that prohibit him from getting a decent contract to begin with.
Deranged Rhino Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 I think Jerry Sullivan would write a strongly worded, self-righteous article if the bills signed him. You ain't lying. That one this morning should be framed in the "I'm a self-righteous idiot" Hall of Fame.

But if BRPD truly doesn't suspect him and it's just basic info gathering, it's horrific how they handled it. I know a murder investigation takes priority but if they don't think he's the killer, the toll they put in this kid is crazy.
apuszczalowski Posted May 3, 2015 Posted May 3, 2015 Maybe all of you could start a fund or pool for this poor young man who may not be able to make multi millions for his first few years playing a game. Maybe some celebrities could come together and have a benefit for him, or at least do some commercials for a fundraising foundation for him

If he's not a suspect, then he's been unjustly prevented from millions of dollars that he worked his tail off to earn. You may not agree with the salaries paid to athletes etc., and that's fine. It doesn't make it any less true that this investigation cost him millions. Now, if he's not clean in all this, then I have no empathy for him at all. Edited May 3, 2015 by thebandit27
