If you were to meet someone who's never actually heard rock and roll music before, and you had to show them just one song that best demonstrates what rock music was/is, what song would it be?

Stones It's Only Rock n Roll

I was thinking the same thing actually. It seems kind of cliché to pick a song about rock n roll, with rock n roll in the title, but it really does define the genre. That backbeat, the angst in the lyrics, and the Chuck Berry style guitar solo all blend together.

Iggy Pop - "Lust For Life"

"It's Only Rock and Roll" is considered by many, to be the point where the Stones jumped the shark, and became self-parody.

Absolutely essential to Quint.

You know, know that I think about it I do kinda picture Tom as Dr Wily. He may not have the same abilities as an evil genius but they do share a common penchant for epic fails

But to the perceived/intended purpose/meaning of the thread, hard to argue against

The Who "Baba O'Riley" has all the aspects you'd expect from Rock & Roll, melody, screaming guitar, screaming vocals, heavy thumping drums, bass line that drives the song throughout....the perfect rock and roll song

Rock and roll is about rebelling against authority. Fortunate Son by CCR did that with a fast paced anthem about sending poor kids to die in an unnecessary war.

You looking for "Rock" or "Rock and Roll?" I think there's a difference and you used both terms in your qualifying question.

I guess it's time for a new TBDism thread.

The original should have never been shut down ... <_<
