More importantly, the part has been written to more closely follow the character in the Ian Fleming novels. There's always been a darker/sadder side to the character vs. the flamboyant playboy that we've come to know in the films through earlier iterations and stars that played the part.

Not just "flamboyant playboy," but campy as well (particularly Roger Moore). Not that I particularly dislike it - For Your Eyes Only is still my favorite Bond movie, for not being completely technology- or stunt-driven. But all the other Bonds lack the slightly sociopathic bent that Craig (appropriately) brings to the character. Dalton and Brosnan tried, but never managed more than "edgy" or "conflicted." But dammit, it just doesn't feel like James Bond without Desmond Llewelyn.
