OnTheRocks Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I am sure many of you know who he is. He announced the SU/UCONN game last night. In my opinion....which I hold in a very high regard Bill Raftery is not only the most underrated sports announcer....I think he is the absolute best. He is the only guy that never seems to have a personal motive behind his commets when calling a game. He simply loves basketball, and enjoys being around the game. He has the same upbeat "with a kiss" approach whether he is calling an exciting sold out college game like last night or a lousy NBA road game between the Nets and Hornets. And to top if all off....he is an all around good guy.

They have some funny good-natured ribbing among each other, they're not afraid to criticize officials (I thought I was watching the 72 Olympics in Munich last night...no home cooking for the Cuse) and they have good objective insight on the actual game. A little man-to-man....nickel dimer.
Golden Wheels Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I certainly enjoy his work more than the imfamous Dick Vitale. Raftery is more likely to comment on what is happening ON THE COURT rather than fill the airwaves with babble.

Miyagi-Do Karate Posted February 8, 2005 Posted February 8, 2005 I completely agree--especially if you're an SU or Big East fan, Raftery is the man. I love it when espn pairs up Raftery and Mike Tirico-- a really solid duo. But the McDonough/Bilas/Raftery crew is also outstanding.
