Good rule change.

Sad that you have to change the rules to prevent the Pats' cheating, though.

Don't worry. They will make use of the injury time out change.

Well they weren't cheating then...

Yeah, they were. Following the letter of the rules while violating the spirit of them is called "gaming the system," and it's considered cheating.

And that's above and beyond the fact that they were violating the rules by improperly declaring eligible/ineligible status on consecutive plays, to get around the substitution rules.

Who will be the first linebacker to change their number to the 40s?

"42 is the Mike" just doesn't have the same ring.

Don't know exactly, but I'm sure that 1) it'll be a Pats linebacker, and 2) they'll somehow find a way to abuse this rule, too. Prrobably something to do with lining up linebackers at tight end or something.

part of this was that beyond there not being enough time to identify the receiver - the Purtids misused the formation on the next play immediately after. I don't recall the exact foul

By you anyway." Violating the spirit of the rules." Would love to see that one called.

It would have been either an illegal substitution or an illegal formation.

The rule violated was that a player declared eligible (or ineligible) has to leave the field and come back on to be considered the ineligible (or eligible).

that's the one. He (they) played ineligible then eligible w/o leaving the field.

that's the one.

And they frequently kept players declared eligible/ineligible on the field for multiple plays - the whole second half of the Ravens game, there was an offensive lineman declared eligible for more than half the plays, including several consecutive plays. But they rarely switched the players' status on the field - that happened maybe three times, and I think only the one time was it done improperly.

Personally, I think a rule that a player declared eligible/ineligible for a play must be off the field for the next play would have been better. The rule they created is good, but it just makes it easier to catch this practice, rather than inhibiting it.
