I forget where I was reading it... Maybe National Geographic. BUT, if I remember... Source said that all the gold mined in human existence would fill about 1.5 Olympic swimming pools up. And... And over 50% of that was mined in the last 50 years.

 

I think if I remember my numbers correctly.

 

Also, I was reading a story from China (I think it may have been posted here) that a youth fell into a pool of arsenic. Supposedly, the youth was having a dispute, ran into a building and the floorboards gave way and fell into said poisoned pool. HOLY CRAP! People living over pools of arsenic! WTF!

 

BTW, I think they use the arsenic to extract the gold from the ore.

 

EDIT: Oops, I am no chemist, I think it is a pool of cyanide... Arsenic is then realeased from the process?
