say hello to Dan Fouts who not only never played in a SB. But I believe never WON an AFC chamionship game.

Wow, never won an AFCC game....AND never appeared in a SB?? That's two strikes against him and he still made it in--you got me!

Anyway....

Fouts got in 23 years ago. Another SD QB with a losing playoff record won't make it into the HOF. Too many better QBs will be eligible in the same era.

When he retires, he should be top 10 in rating, yards and TDs with a bunch of Pro Bowls. He has a really good chance. He isn't a lock but his case will be similar to Warren Moon's.

Statistically though, it may be similar to the Steve smith talk the other day where it's top ten but in a passing era.

does a qb that's not top 5 of his peers get the nod because of volume stats in an era that favors compiling those? I even forgot Rodgers in that top 5 candidates. So rivers is like 7th? It may depend on if anyone behind this group, besides luck and Wilson stakes a claim. If there's a bit of a void in the next class he may get a chance.

Didn't he beat the Bills in an AFC championship game back in the day.

Dan Fouts never won an AFC title

The Chargers have appeared in a single Super Bowl in the mid 90s, long after Fouts had retired

He's probably referring to the 1980 season when Fouts was the QB and we lost to SD in the Divisional Finals not the AFC Championship Game. We were decimated by injuries and should have won the game anyway. 1980 and the first Bills Super Bowl season were the two years that I believed we were the very best team overall in the NFL. Iirc, we beat both teams that were in the Super Bowl and we beat both teams that were in the previous Super Bowl. We were 11-5 but had a great balanced team, very good coaching and some quality players on both sides of the ball. If Fergy wasn't hurt we would have been in the Championship and possibly the SB. I don't know if we were "denominated" but Fergy was a trooper in that game. it hurt too watch him play. Loved his toughness.

Ha. Friggin autocorrect. Decimated. Our safeties were hurt. The chargers got that late long TD pass to win it after we had the lead at half like 14-3. It's funny how everyone remembers that game for how valiant Fergy was, which was true, he could barely walk, but he threw three INTs.

I am a big Rivers fan but I don't see how he makes it in. He is and has been a better Quarterback than Eli Manning, but Eli has won two Superbowls and whatever people say about his defense he made clutch plays in both wins. Can you write the history of the NFL 2000-2015 without Philip Rivers as good as he has been? I think you can, but you can't write it without those two Superbowl winning drives of Eli Manning.

To me from that 00s era Favre (I know straddled the 90s as well) Brady and Manning are first ballot locks.... Brees will get in within 3 years maximum of his eligibility, Big Ben makes it pretty quickly also and Eli has to wait a little longer. Rodgers may well be a first ballot guy but the time distance between the likely retirements at least of Manning, Brady and Brees before Rodgers comes up as eligible means he won't quite find himself in the same kind of possible backlog position. Could easily be 7 or 8 years between Brady and Rodgers becoming eligible for example.

totally agree with the sentiment that its a long shot, but timing could help him if he retires after the rest of this crew but before a next wave starts. maybe.

on the re-write history point, ironically, his 2 long lasting signature items are replacing brees and the manning trade. on his first day in the league, his legacy ended up tied to two hall of famers.

IMO Rivers is an afterthought in the history of the league. Nice stats but still 3000 yards behind both Eli and Ben and he's 4-5 in the playoffs. All time greats have signature moments, games, years, etc. But what is the enduring memory of Rivers other than what you point out in the last paragraph.

Eli meanwhile is 8-3 in the playoffs and has always played his best in the biggest games. The two SBs and that NFCC game in the mud at SF when he was beaten to a pulp are what I'll remember about Eli.

Rivers goes into the HOVG along with Bledsoe.

He wouldn't get in before McNabb even. If he plays 5 more years, you're looking at 10 yeears before he's eligible. If he has no better playoff success, I don't see what distinguishes him as a HOFer.

I don't think Eli makes it past the HOVG either.

I'd have him in before McNabb but then I know I like him much more than you do. I don't think either are HOF's. Of course Rivers could still do something to change that but how many years does he have left at a high level given the battering he has taken behind some poxy offensive lines?

Have him in before McNabb? Only if you really like him and that is your only criteria for voting.

McNabb played in 5 NFCC games and a SB. He had over 37,000 yards passing and 3500 yards rushing. 6 Pro Bowls.

rivers at essentially 37k currently, in2 fewer years, might land at about 50k yards in the end. He has 5 probowls already. And neither has won a ring.

There's an argument to be made there for rivers being ahead of mcnabb, but you really dislike him.
