If we had a D when Gailey was here....

Stevie? Yes because Stevie is so good that the Niners just cut him after trading a 4th round pick for him despite needing WR help. Steve was a product of Chan and his play from way behind approach and pile garbage stats in the 4th qtr of bad losses. Steve RARELY had big games in games that mattered...in fact, in our wins we ran more than passed...in our losses we threw more than ran. Steve is very over rated.

I'd wager that just about every NFL team without a good QB.

Carry on.

We had a historically bad defense. We would have won more games with a good defense. No question about it. Not sure why anyone would argue this. Would we have won the SB? No, but we could've won 2-3 more games each year. Don't underestimate how bad our defense was.

Had nothing to do with it...I did an analysis of his entire season and posted it back then on here. In games where we threw more than ran, we lost...every single one. However, the pace of the game didn't always force us to throw in a lot of those games...in other words we weren't always down big early. Games where we are within 7 at half time and we just keep passing. Games where the run game had been clicking big time...he still chose to go back to forcing the pass with a bad QB. We lost every single game we passed more than ran, and we won every single game we ran more than passed. Yet Chan was obsessed with passing, even when it wasnt necessary.

Yet, in games that were close, Chan would STILL insist on passing constantly, including games within one score at half where he literally ran less than 5 times in the entire second half. Not to mention the dumb pass calls constantly on 3rd and short.

CHAN IS A MORON...

Fitz didn't beat us. EJ Manuel did.

No JJ Watt did. Hard for a young QB to do much when one player hits you by himself 9 times in the game, not to mention the other players who were in his face the moment he snapped the ball. Our OL got demolished that game. EJ gets too much hate because of one game adjacent the best player in the NFL who completely schooled our OL the entire game like they were a High School team.

The topic of the thread is, if we had a D when Gailey was here. The thing is, the Bills tried. They put together M Williams - Dareus - K Williams and figured with a great D line like that, everything would fall into place. But Mario hurt his wrist and couldn't play his game, the replacement refs let opposing O linemen do whatever they wanted, and the D never got itself aligned. The main difference between now and then is the LBs are much better now. And of course so is the coaching.

So they had 3 good players on D? Byrd was there too, so 4.

Huge difference from then and now. Not just in the LBs.

Adding Hughes was huge, the coaching which allowed for the emergence of AW, Gilmore and McK was huge. Graham and Robey were big too. Plus, improved depth on the line.

We had actually a really good defense that was 4-3 defense.

It kept us in games the year before where buffalo was still in the game either lead, tied, or one score down when entering the 4th in something like 14 of the 16 games.

The offense was so inept it fist us.

Gailey should have kept the defense as us instead if give his buddy a job that set the defense back by trying yo switch irpt to a 3-4.

A Trocious was Wanny. and those that think Gailey had options on who to bring on? They promoted an expired coach from the linebackers core. who sucked at coaching those linebackers. yes lets promote him!

CHEAP was how it was done back then.

Gailey is a much better coach then "some " give him credit for. he had few players and less staff. gotta watch those pennies dontcha know!

sincerely

ahh... another "could've been a contender" Gailey thread.

Chan Gailey is just another coach. He's competent enough to do some things but very limited in other areas. He wasn't exactly highly sought after when the Bills brought him in as HC.

There are probably 50 college and NFL coaches that you could swap out with Chan Gailey and get the same results. No insult to him as a person, but as a coach he's completely mediocre.

Ahhh, but if only HE and his popgun QB Fitz had this D.....

Bottom line: Rex Ryan is an elite defensive coach. Easily one of the top 3 in the NFL today. Even his critics acknowledge that he is an awesome defensive coach.

Chan is nowhere near the offensive coach that Rex is on D. Chan is fine as an OC. Not elite but fine. As a HC he was below average.

Jauron won more games here than Gailey. So did Marrone.
