K D Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 A lot of inside sources seem to agree that Freddy's leaving is fait accompli. If so, I'm genuinely disappointed to hear this. Freddy is not just a quality vet who always gets the critical extra yard, block or catch, he's also the heart and soul of the team. The consummate pro whose work ethic, attitude, leadership and credibility is necessary for every successful team. He's so much more valuable than a free agent special teams contributor, or a never-has-been stiff like Bryce Brown, who showed no heart and failed miserably trying to replace injured Freddy last season. The impact of losing Freddy cannot be measured in statistics or dollars. It would be a damn shame for this young, talented team starved for leadership, and the fans of Buffalo who love him, to have this happen now. Good post. Totally agree I wonder if they are trying to avoid friction between McCoy and Fred. They had some beef on twitter last year. And Fred is the leader of this team and McCoy is a diva. That might be part of it

Reed83HOF Posted March 9, 2015 Author Posted March 9, 2015 Tim Graham @ByTimGraham 57s57 seconds ago Neon signs pointing that way now. Bills have a tough call to make, likely soon RT @billsdaily so you are thinking Jackson gone regardless?

Ittakestime Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 (edited) What it comes down to is that Rex's system needs depth players to have multiple roles. Rex's system relies on a lot of players that interchange a lot. His d will have certain plays where players will only play on that play. In normal d a team could probably get away with have 16-18 d players active on game day, however, Rex will require into the 20s. A guy like Fred who is a backup, who doesn't play D means that is one less player Rex has available for his D. If you are a back up not on the lines, you need to play special teams. Boatdrinks Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Would be up there with Thurman signing with the fins in my book. No way. Love FJAX, but there's just no comparing him to Thurman. The guy is in the hall of fame and was MVPof the league in '91. It is not even close to that situation .
negativo Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 Would the Steelers have won their Super Bowl XL without the leadership and motivation of aging, beloved Jerome Bettis finishing the last season of his career? Hell, they dedicated their whole season to him. Would the Giants have beaten us without aging, beloved OJ Anderson, the old warrior vet playing his final season? No chance. Sometimes, a player at the end of his career can inspire a good team to greatness. If Freddy were to have his farewell season in 2015, the city, the team, the fans, hell maybe even the football world would be inspired and moved by the idea of winning one for Freddy. It might even be enough to lift us from a playoff contender to something much, much more. Fred is a special player who had a special career who built a special bond with the city and its fans. In many ways, he symbolizes Buffalo. A player like this is not another replaceable commodity. As Buffalo's favorite son, who has such a special and unique love affair with the town and the team, to not ride this final wave to possible glory for us all would be an injustice beyond measure.
Max997 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 If Powell signs and is the special teams back where does that leave Boobie? Is it possible we are all making the wrong assumption for which bsck gets cut?

I love Fred but why is this that year? Why not last or two from now? It comes across as a last grab to keep him in the face of today's reports.
Chuck Wagon Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 If Powell signs and is the special teams back where does that leave Boobie? Is it possible we are all making the wrong assumption for which bsck gets cut? Shady - Bellcow Brown - primary backup Powell - special teams / backup 3rd down back Dixon - Special teams / short yardage back
3rdand12 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 I sure hope so. If not i hope he retires gracefully. i am sure he wants another year and feels he has enough gas for it but maybe its time??

KCNC Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 If they cut Fred outright this season, the Bills will lose me as a fan. They need his leadership even if it is just this one last season.

billsfan89 Posted March 9, 2015 Posted March 9, 2015 He's a 34 year old back at a young mans position. He's had great moments for the Bills and is a gamer in every sense, but he's old and not as effective as he used to be. Happens to every player, even great guys like Fred. I wouldn't be surprised if he's not back in 2015. New HC, new team. I think they want to have competition at the running back position. Brown, Booby, and Freddie would all be on the bubble if they brought in Powell which might push each guy to preform better. As long as Powell doesn't get any guaranteed money I have no issue with it.

He wasn't highly valued by the 9ers and now their OC is in Buffalo. He could be the odd man out. Edited March 9, 2015 by Rob's House
