@JasonLaCanfora: Mark Ingram remains in New Orleans on a 4year/$16m deal. $4M/yr best he was going to do. Tough sledding for RBs out there

Spiller turned down 4.5 from us?

That was my first thought as well.

I really like Ingram though...somehow the Saints just keep on rolling and just confirms that if a team wants a player they will find a way to sign him regardless of their cap situation.

I think Ingram is really average. He wasn't good for a long time, and I doubt he is going to get much if any better than he played last year. 4m seems about right for that guy, I doubt he would get any more on the open market.

Agreed. He's just a dude. Nothing special. I'm actually surprised he got that much.

I was waiting for pretty close to 4 but the same area as spiller. Both players that have an appeal but never put it together the way you'd hope consistently.

I'm still very surprised spillers camp pushed back on 4.5 unless it was terribly structured.

Spiller is going to get at least 5 I think and maybe more.

You have seen him a lot more than me, but when fans say RBs are a dime a dozen, Ingram is the kind of guy that comes to mind. He's just pretty good but not great at anything. He is likely close to his ceiling. He doesn't have one trait that is outstanding. Spiller is a much more enviable player to teams I think. If Spiller turned down 4.5 from the Bills as reported, I think he gets more on the open market. He may get something like 4.5 or 5 with a lot of incentives he may not reach.

+1. In fact they may have even overpaid him.

I think you short sell Ingram a little on his best days. He's strong, has shown balance and ability to run after contact -- he can be a 3 down back. Poor mans frank gore currently, kind of like cj is a poor mans McCoy.

I just have a hard time getting to 5m+ for cj... That's not the pay grade for potential or flashes, that's established elite backs (minus Trent richardsons top 5 pick contract)... You are talking fringe top 5 in the league contract at that value

Yea I was guessing a 3 year 10m but high end range around 12m if a few teams liked him. Saints hit that high end right out of the gate. I think generally fair on both sides but definitely no home team discount at work.

If he wanted to stay on the Bills and turned down 4.5 I have to think his agent knows he can get 5. I also think that RBs don't get huge money because they are not reliable for years, so you're not going to give a guy a huge contract or bonus because you don't know he is going to stay that way for 3-4-5 years. But 5m for a year is not a lot to pay. He's just not going to get a huge bonus or guarantee. I think there are a lot of teams and coaches that would love to have him, as in the report today that if Murray doesn't stay with the Cowboys, that Spiller is high on their list.

He gets hurt a lot. That will hold his number down. I'll be surprised if he doesn't get 5 or 5+.

Id speculate that structure (length, average in the first 2-3 years, guaranteed dollars) might have been a bigger issue than the raw 4.5 average being reported.... I just don't see how we can get to spiller being in the top tier contracts. He'd be behind Peterson, lynch, McCoy, foster charles and forte.... The list doesn't change much if he drops from 5.5 to 4 flat but it puts him in a bunch with the Ingram, bush, sproles and shonn greens of the world..... I can see him at the head of that group but struggle with him being the tail end of the other group which is what that 1-2m gap does

Spiller will get more because of his special teams ability. A team can bring him in play him 2 downs at RB or 3 downs at a hybrid WR/rb. And he can return, one of the best in the league.

Spiller is so overrated. A couple big plays a year interspersed with dozens of poor plays. Completely limited in types of runs you can call and a liability in pass pro. Ingram is the better player.

He might be average, but he's all the Saints got. Resigning him was a security measure.

The last 24 games he's been pretty good. The concern here is if he coasts til his next contract year or plays like this guy that flashed (ala spiller a few years back). Without checking - 2014 was just shy of 1000 yards and 9 tds with 3-4 missed games and he added another 30 or so catches.

If playing 16 games that is about 1200 yards 10+ tds and 35-40 catches? The tail end of 2013 had some pretty solid weeks too. Was just chatting with someone about it and something like 4-5 games after Halloween (ie last half of the season) where he was over 10 touches and over 5ypc
