DrDawkinstein Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) Jerry wants to get paid. People will automatically blame the Bills. But the Bills just simply cannot afford to sign him to what he wants. IMO, Jerry is going to go down as one of those bad FA signings that does not live up to the contract if he gets the 10+MM a year. He will no longer had Mario and Dareus to take pressure off of him. Good luck to him though. Nate Clements Jairus Byrd Andy Levitre I know there are plenty more... You'd think other teams would learn to just leave us and our players alone! Not at all... its the world of FA. Bills can use that money on other needs and also replace him, IMO. I love 55 but that's the reality of FA. Dont under-estimate Bills fans. The only thing they love more than the Bills is hating on the Bills. There are plenty of recent posts in the other Hughes thread asking things like "Why dont the Bills just sign him already?!" as if its completely up to the Bills. Weren't these type of things going to change with the sainted Pegulas taking over? See, Yolo ^^^, It's happening already. Edited March 6, 2015 by DrDareustein
nucci Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 They are the ones with the most cap space and worst pass rush. But it doesn't mean he will. Eagles have ton of cap space and a bad pass rush. Other good teams will fit him in if necessary. I understand the Bills not signing but why the hate for Hughes now? He was a great player for us and now may leave. This stuff happens all the time.
billieve420 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Hughes is now the top available FA DE available. He is good as gone in my opinion. If we can use the money that was going to go to him and use it towards a OG, DE, LB, and TE. I rather have a Clint Boling, Jason Worilds, David Harris, and Julius Thomas than just Hughes and another player.
GaryPinC Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Doug better learn his lesson and not make the same mistake with Dareus. If you really want him here you pay him the year before his contract expires. Actions speak louder than words.

As it stands right now, we have no idea whether the Eagles will be a good team. They will, if anything, be a very different team. Where is hate for Hughes? I'm confused... thebandit27 Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 If he ends up leaving, I wish him well. Very good player. I think he'll probably get his $11M or $12M, and that's fine. It's also more than this team can responsibly pay him and still expect to keep Mario, Dareus, Gilmore, Glenn, and Bradham in the next 2 offseasons. I expect they'll dip into FA to replace him...there are lesser-while-still-effective options out there for certain.
DrDawkinstein Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Doug better learn his lesson and not make the same mistake with Dareus. If you really want him here you pay him the year before his contract expires. Actions speak louder than words. Again, see Yolo. All the Bills fault.

Where is hate for Hughes? I'm confused... Some are criticizing him for not taking the Bills offer...saying he won't be as productive and seem to wish that he goes to a crappy team and plays poorly.

So pay the guy a huge contract after his first and only effective NFL season (out of 3) playing alongside the best DL in football? That...doesn't...make...sense.

YoloinOhio Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Some are criticizing him for not taking the Bills offer...saying he won't be as productive and seem to wish that he goes to a crappy team and plays poorly. oh.... well, I don't know if that's "hate" but I see your point. IF he goes to a team with a bad D and he's their "Mario" and only sees double teams, he may very well be less productive. But I don't wish that for him. Actually, I do think he started seeing some double teams toward the end of last year, when the Bills had their rotational guys in.
eball Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Big loss. Should have Franchised him... It will cost the Bills more than just $$$ This is an intriguing statement. What will it cost them -- retail sales from Hughes jerseys? Please explain.

YoloinOhio Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 Hate could be a strong word and I may be overreacting. Nah I just hope people understand it's just FA. It sucks and we take it personally, but it is what it is. He was a great player here; he can be replaced.
8-8 Forever? Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 Guessing Bills are offering around $8-9M and his agent knows teams will pay $10-11M. Going to miss him. This is the normal process. My sense is the Bills will have an opportunity to compete. This is his one shot at the $$$. This is how it works.
WhitewalkerInPhilly Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 It would be sad to lose him. But in Rex's system he'd be a third down specialist. For what he is likely to get on the open market I can imagine picking up a solid guard and an Alan Branch like journeyman 3-4 DE. You can get a one down speed rusher in the draft, or dirt cheap like Sam or Blackmon if that's all you are asking of them.

Dorkington Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) I think he'll get paid big bucks elsewhere, and likely not perform as well but still be solid, depending on what type of line he's playing on. He's damned good, but he also benefited heavily from playing with three pro-bowlers, two of which were often double teamed. If he gets double teamed on a regular basis, I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the open market again in a couple seasons. Again, this isn't me saying he sucks, but I don't think he's as good as the paycheck he's about to get... and I bet that's why the Bills offered him what they did. Edited March 6, 2015 by Dorkington
YoloinOhio Posted March 6, 2015 Author Posted March 6, 2015 (edited) Anyone else think there will be some FA pass rushers pretty eager to fill this role on our DL and play in Rex's scheme? I'd say we have as attractive a pull as any team for a guy like McPhee. It isn't like the Bills will be offering pennies either. Edited March 6, 2015 by YoloinOhio
