At this point I'd trust Rex to know what he needs and doesn't need. Hughes is a solid player, but I'm not necessarily sure he's a scheme fit anymore.

Additionally, the Bills were among the top spenders on defensive personnel in 2014. Re-signing Hughes puts them further up there, but presumably at the cost of building a better OL.

If he ends up leaving, I wish him well. Very good player.

I think he'll probably get his $11M or $12M, and that's fine.

It's also more than this team can responsibly pay him and still expect to keep Mario, Dareus, Gilmore, Glenn, and Bradham in the next 2 offseasons.

I expect they'll dip into FA to replace him...there are lesser-while-still-effective options out there for certain.

I think this is right. No way can they overpay hughes and retain the rest of the talent going forward. His value does not exceed the cap flexibility he would cost. If he goes to a team with an average D, he'll look average, like in Indy. He wont go to a team with a great D, because that team will already have significant investment in DE. All that said, if I were him I would absolutely go to the place offering me the most guaranteed money, he would be stupid and irresponsible to do otherwise.

I think he'll get paid big bucks elsewhere, and likely not perform as well but still be solid, depending on what type of line he's playing on. He's damned good, but he also benefited heavily from playing with three pro-bowlers, two of which were often double teamed. If he gets double teamed on a regular basis, I wouldn't be surprised to see him on the open market again in a couple seasons. Again, this isn't me saying he sucks, but I don't think he's as good as the paycheck he's about to get... and I bet that's why the Bills offered him what they did.

Unfortunately for him, he won't see many years of it if he only plays good or solid with a centerpiece contract. One thing with the bills is if he keeps doing what he's been doing he would, imo, have a better shot of outlasting just the guaranteed money.

I dont think scheme-fit has anything to do with Hughes and Alonso not being retained since they both did very well under Pettine (who runs a scheme pretty similar to Rex's).

However, I do believe that "Rex's scheme" plays a factor, in that Rex and Whaley are confident that Rex can get very good performance on Defense with a little less talent than we've had in the past couple of years. The coaching on D will make up for losing a guy or two from the 2014 Defense. I agree that they'd rather spend that money improving the much weaker Offensive side of the ball where more talent is needed.

There several less heralded guys out there who can step in and be effective.

Derrick Morgan

Brooks Reed

Pernell McPhee

Brandon Graham

Dareus is wasted at NT, so I think the Bills will want to bring in a true NT like Dan Williams also.

See ya.

Sorry our $9M a year wasnt good enough for you

See how well you do on a lesser defense.

Hope you do better than your stats with the Colts

Why do people get so pissy when both sides make the financially correct decision (assuming it does happen). If the Bills offer 9 and someone else offers 10, think about that for one minute people ... that's one MILLION dollars we are talking about! This is his business and his families future, he isn't just some Bills homer hanging out on a fan board.

It's real easy to spend other people's money.

Anyone else think there will be some FA pass rushers pretty eager to fill this role on our DL and play in Rex's scheme? I'd say we have as attractive a pull as any team for a guy like McPhee. It isn't like the Bills will be offering pennies either.

Either is fine by me, as they know the goals, plans, schemes etc and we don't.... Ultimately it's more about getting the scouting on the guys right than the exact breakdown of dollars and positions - for the most part in that scenario

Eagles have ton of cap space and a bad pass rush. Other good teams will fit him in if necessary. I understand the Bills not signing but why the hate for Hughes now? He was a great player for us and now may leave. This stuff happens all the time.

It always happens. Players who played at a high level for us who jettison the team and the fans turn on them. Some are even disparaging Kiko by insinuating the main asset he had was his hair

@jchenelly: Jerry Hughes has decided to test the open market. #Bills #NFL #FreeAgency

I don't need a quote from some random twitter fan to know Hughes is going to FA...

Like I have been saying for weeks go after Hardy.

God bless Jerry. More power to him - if I was lucky enough to be in his shoes I'd do the exact same thing.

For me as a fan it's just a game. For him it's his livelihood. Go for it!

And what do I care anyway? We have Matt Cassel! Can anybody say "second Wild Card spot"? Yeeeee. Haaawwww!

I hope he is ready to be the # 1 guy on defense and the main focus point.

He is great when he has a great surrounding cast around him but how will he be on his own?

Why does this matter? Hughes is a very good player and you seem to like to put him down..saying everything he accomplished here was because of others and nothing to do with Hughes talent? You seem to be taking this personally

So go after Hardy who will surely command $14 million a year?

I have thought all along Hughes ends up in Atlanta.

Atlanta will overpay for him and Hughes will have a tough time matching his numbers the past two seasons.

People in Atlanta will say he is another bust FA.

I do not blame Whaley one bit for standing his ground. There is a good bit of DE out there available in FA. If the Bills overpay an extra $2mil here $1.5 there and $3mil to this guy, next thing you know you can't sign Dareus.

Go get paid Hughes! I would and so would every guy on here. You know you would!

So, commit more money than Hughes is asking for to a guy that will very likely miss multiple games this year due to suspension and hasn't played a down of football (or even practiced) since the first week of September?

I'd rather go after a guy (or even 2 guys) like A. Clayborn, D. Morgan, A. Spencer, B. Graham, D. Freeney, P. McPhee, B. Reed, D. Skuta, or J. Sheard.

McPhee is going to get paid only slightly less than Hughes. Morgan, Reed and Graham are interesting names. Obviously we all know Hardy can play, but given teams being desperate for pass rushers, I'd be surprised if he signs near a cheap as some seem to believe. No one will give him a long contract, but he's not going to be signing for $2 mil.
